RE: mastodon.social/@lashman/11703…

"We need nazis on Bluesky for 'balance'"

Notice how it's never "Twitter is a right wing cesspit, something should be done to make it more Liberal" with American Social Media.

Why Europeans think Bluesky is going to be any different from the other American networks, guess they're suckers for slick marketing....

@gabboman

there should be one decentralized social media network with everyone on it, like the web. but also where pushing yourself into feeds, like spam, isn't tolerated. ultimately, it can't be X or bluesky cause those both won't really be decentralized ever.

my brother is MAGA. I'm sure most of us have family that wouldn't be treated well here if they honestly expressed themselves and boosted stuff they liked, even if they weren't intentionally bothering anyone. that has to change.

@wjmaggos So you are saying, if a MAGA guy spouts nonsense and hate speech here, we shouldn't feel bothered and tolerate it. But if we refute their views and stand up for ourselves, it will be seen as treating them badly?

I hope you see the problem here. Everyone is welcome if they behave like decent human beings. If not, they will reap what they sow.

you should feel as bothered by someone saying that stuff on fedi as you do about all the horrible websites that exist. without algos and when nobody is tagged and it's posted on a server you're not on, it should be completely ignorable. we don't try to police the web in the way we do fedi, otherwise I'd be unable to browse nice sites cause I also browse bad sites (my server is blocked because of which other servers I federate with).

@wjmaggos @kaspi

william the issue is not your arguments, the issue is:

why do you work so damn hard arguing for the speech of intolerant losers?

what do you gain out of that?

what is your motivation?

i feel like you're a well-meaning guy with a dear friend or family member who is a MAGA turd, and rather than take the difficult task of cutting them off, as they deserve, you instead tasked yourself with the dubious exercise of how to accommodate them

you're on a fool's errand william

I don't believe that the majority of people here want a fedi where expressing shitty opinions or boosting stuff many don't like, means it's ok to be harassed or exiled.

or maybe the majority here does feel that way, but then we will never grow. which they are probably ok with, but it means the vast majority of people can't use social media or will be on platforms with algos where they get bombarded with horrible propaganda.

in reply to Resuna

@resuna @wjmaggos @kaspi

concretely:

shitty opinions =

1. bigotry: "what is a woman?" "your skin color is politically problematic," etc

2. disinfo: "vaccines kill," "eu made russia attack ukraine," etc

some other categories

but unfortunately there's also people with differing opinions on extremely emotional topics that do *not* boil down to bigotry and disinfo. and yet people are getting muted and suspended for them. we want to stop that sort of mod/ admin capriciousness

@benroyce @wjmaggos @kaspi Yeh, I got permabanned from a sub on reddit for reposting an article that used expletives in its title, but I kind of don't mind if people want their forum to be a bit more straight-laced than I care to conform to.
in reply to Resuna

@resuna @benroyce @kaspi

neither do I. that's one user getting banned from a quasi private space. what I'm concerned about is a fedi norm that supports harassment and fediblocks for opinions deemed somewhere on the conservative spectrum. for entire servers with a few users who post like that. sometimes for entire servers that federate with such servers.

and while this might have personal benefit, it leads to us staying small and bad places growing. at least everyone can connect over there.

in reply to Resuna

@resuna @benroyce @kaspi

Any conservative opinion posted here is likely to get you widely called a Nazi and harassed and blocked, maybe your entire server. but yes imo there is a difference.

in reply to william ⁂ maggos

@wjmaggos @resuna @benroyce @kaspi That's just not true. For example discussion of what the income tax level should be is a classic left vs right discussion but that's not going to get people automatically banned. The things that get an automatic ban on most servers are calling for vulnerable groups to be deprived of civil liberties or worse, authoritarian murderous stuff that dehumanises and scapegoats minorities.
