Hello fediverse!

This morning we shipped an exciting new version of #Flipboard that enables *anyone* on Flipboard to follow *anyone* in the fediverse.

This is the culmination of a ton of work to deeply integrate #ActivityPub into the product. The result is incredibly seamless.

Just tap on the search icon in Flipboard and tap the follow button for anyone featured there or that you find in search. You’ll soon start seeing their posts in all of your relevant Flipboard feeds.

Check the screenshots below and read this post to learn more:

woohoo!

Great work Mike! Faster and more reliable than Threads!

Very admirable.

in reply to Mike McCue

this is so exciting! If I understand it correctly, users can subscribe to federated content without needing to create an account on the fediverse, right? Then, if they do want to join the fediverse, they'll have access to more options (like commenting).
in reply to Doctor Popular

@docpop Exactly. Starting today every Flipboard user can follow every fediverse user and see their posts in relevant feeds.

Also starting today, any Flipboard user can request to federate their Flipboard account which will turn them into a full blown Fediverse user who can be discovered and followed from Mastodon and other fediverse apps.

Mike McCue reshared this.

in reply to Mike McCue

@docpop it's amazing to see flipboard embracing the fediverse so fully, it's impressive!

could you explain how we can request to federate our flipboard account ? do we need to create a flipboard.social account for that ?

in reply to Doctor Popular

@docpop
If I understand correctly, Flipboard is now fully part of the Fediverse?

So, that's why there's no need to create a separate account, because your existing Flipboard account now has Fediverse compatibility?

in reply to Mike McCue

I just installed the update, it seems to work very well (finally the Pixelfed aggregation also works).

It's a very interesting and promising goal, congratulations. @flipboard is always ahead of everyone! And keep it up!

in reply to Mike McCue

Congratulations, Mike! We're already spreading the word.

in reply to We Distribute

@hello Thank you! And one really important point to highlight:

This is actually a full blown ActivityPub follow. So what that means is that if your Flipboard account is federated it is a full two way connection and you can reply to posts.

Also, starting today, any Flipboard user can request to federate their account to gain this two way capability. We are gradually federating more and more accounts as we scale our backend.

in reply to Mike McCue

Each person/account shows up as a separate magazine, right? Is there an easy way to combine them?
in reply to Dan Neuman

@dan613 Great Q. We definitely need a way to do this. I believe the fediverse should have a notion of multiple feeds for a single account. This would also help enable things like publicly shareable lists. Open to ideas for how to make this happen!
in reply to Mike McCue

I was thinking more like lists on Flipboard. It's not just for the Fediverse, but any RSS feed like WordPress. I can do it with an external RSS aggregator, but I don't see why Flipboard couldn't do this internally (multiple feeds per magazine).
in reply to Mike McCue

If it's any help, PeerTube is in the same boat, they have a concept of accounts which own multiple channels, but Mastodon (incorrectly IMHO) interprets these channels as groups, just as it does for Flipboard's magazines.

Perhaps this interpretation could be worked on at Mastodon's end via the Mastodon Github?

The multiple feeds per account thing is already possible on the Fedi, it's just Mastodon is not handling/displaying these correctly.

What I'm envisioning for the future is a way to have one of my mastodon lists show up as a flipboard magazine 😊

I have no idea how to make that happen bc I'm just a user, but that would be pretty great!

@_ohcoco_ @dan613 Turns out you can do this today. You can log into your Mastodon account directly and then you can access your lists as a flipboard magazine. To do this, go to the following tab (the 4 squares icon), select the accounts sub tab, select mastodon, log into your account, then tap on your account from this tab and you'll see your lists. Screen shots here:
in reply to Mike McCue

oohhhh...! Setting this up will be my Thursday reward for doing homework tonight & class tomorrow 😊 @dan613

@marcr
Ist das gut oder nicht? Was bedeutet das für den einzelnen Durchschnittströtifanten wie mich?

in reply to Silent Freak

@Nudelfreak Dies bedeutet, dass Flipboard-Benutzer jetzt Beiträge von Fediverse-Benutzern sehen können, die von Mastodon, Threads, Pixelfed usw. posten.
in reply to Mike McCue

in reply to Mike McCue

great work getting this out before threads could fully roll it out
in reply to Mike McCue

Great news. And thanks for interviewing Ghost co-founder John O'Nolan. I love Ghost.

BTW. I have a Tellme t-shirt that I'm never letting go of.

in reply to Mike McCue

Okay. I might have to return to flipboard! I used it *ages* ago, but this looks great.
in reply to Mike McCue

Tried connect from app myself, potus, @xChaos, @Kosmo Klub, even Kara Swisher. It's not working. Search for Social is full of YT users and channels, nothing from Fediverse.

🤷‍♂️
@Mike McCue
in reply to Martin Kostera

@martin Will look into this. Be sure you're using the very latest version of Flipboard. CCing @FlipboardCS to help.
in reply to Martin Kostera

@martin you should see a Fediverse sub tab when you go to search. Like this:
in reply to Mike McCue

@Mike McCue Android. I see Fediverse sub, but I can't rolling down for hours to find anybody. There are millions accounts on Fediverse(tried to roll down for several minutes, no POTUS, for example). And when I use search, Fediverse sub disappear and in result I can't see anything from Fediverse. 🤷‍♂️

@Denny My eyes are aging too so I sympathize with this. I'll see what we can do to get this improved.
in reply to Mike McCue

@Flipboard I checked it with my Mastodon Account and my WordPress blog and it seems to show my Mastodon posts on Flipboard, but I can't see my Flipboard Account in the followers list of Mastodon or my Blog?

Does flipboard send a real "Follow" request or does it simply subscribe to the outbox in a similar way as with RSS?

I would love to debug it a bit, so that it plays nicely with the WordPress plugin, but I can't see any requests to the inbox at all.

in reply to Mike McCue

Nice! But it would be great to use Flipboard as the proper Mastodon client (with like/reply/post/retoot access) for the connected Fedi account.
in reply to Amit Pundir :android: :tux:

@pundir You can actually do this by connecting your fedi account to Flipboard. Go to the Following tab (the tab with 4 squares) and select the accounts tab. Then sign in to mastodon and you'll see your home timeline, mentions, lists, etc. and can fully reply, like, etc.
in reply to Mike McCue

I tried the same yesterday. The timeline loaded but I couldn't post and felt like it worked in read-only mode. But thank you for confirming that flipboard can be used as a Mastodon client. I'll try again today.

@ben Your screenshots make it look like it's mostly integration with the Meta product known as Threads 😜
in reply to 9.4 tons of oreo filling :drgn_flag_gay:

nah they are using threads fediverse icon instead the classical one.

not gona deny its an icon that aesthetically works better with current apps and stuff like that (circles better than straight lines. being straight is bad joke here).

Nothing important worth blocking I think. They just enabled federation for everyone

in reply to Gabbo the wafrn guy :neocat_floof_devil_256: (not a vampire)

we mention the ceo for everything on Thy Freddy Verses !!! :mlm_fedi: Nobody is spared.
also i just don't remember what flipboard did but i guess we'll keep it federating. it seems like they provide news sources directly. will probably suspend the fox account though
in reply to Mike McCue

well while you are here i wanna ask the question as the original post that started this thread, why the meta fedi icon instead of the original? was there a reason for using that one instead? i think it'd be better to use the original icon to prevent any future confusion or anything like "the thing facebook made"
in reply to 9.4 tons of oreo filling :drgn_flag_gay:

@sneexy @gabboman fair question. I don’t think the fediverse icon works particularly well when scaled down and when placed next to or on top of avatars. Also the vast majority of people have never even seen that icon. Meanwhile the threads fediverse icon is simple and clean, doesn’t rely on color, and works well scaled down. Most of all, whether we like it or not, millions of people are being exposed to this icon everyday on Threads as a symbol of the fediverse so I think it’s a pragmatic choice.
in reply to Mike McCue

at this point it would be better to just fetch the instance's favicon (like *key and akkoma does)

unless it's just for promo material then ignore the fetch suggestion, but nonetheless it's frankly disrespectful to the network that y'all are compliant in meta's attempts at the EEE of fediverse

@Mike McCue A new proposal for a Fediverse logo is a Unicode character: ⁂ (U+2042).

Most of all, whether we like it or not, millions of people are being exposed to this icon everyday on Threads as a symbol of the fediverse so I think it’s a pragmatic choice.

This would not only allow, but actively help Meta assume control over the Fediverse.

in reply to Jupiter Rowland

@jupiter_rowland That’s a cool suggestion. Will explore that and other options. They key is we need everyone to use the same icon otherwise users will be very confused.
in reply to Mike McCue

@jupiter_rowland We just made a page to explain ⁂ more in details if you’re interested: https://symbol.fediverse.info
in reply to Mike McCue

@jupiter_rowland even today not everyone is using the same icon. Many people are using the Mastodon logo when what they are representing is the fediverse, Theads stepped in and made up their own (which I see you are now using) but having Meta be the one to choose symbology for us seems very counter to many of our collective visions. And having each platform and each software all use different symbology is indeed very confusing. Thus this initiative.
