The tale of "convenience" is a bit of a trick. A lot of corporate provided services maybe were somewhat convenient a decade ago, but they are now increasingly authoritarian, and people tend to ignore how much time they steal.

Total number of hours spent solving captchas or consent screens with #deltachat #chatmail and #webxdc apps: 0 (zero). Nada. Zilch.

Compare with the estimated 819 million hours which humans spent with Google's recaptcha alone boingboing.net/2025/02/07/reca…

The important point here is that #deltachat is a private messenger, not a public messenger and not a social network. Others fill that role already. Discoverability should stay in the hands of each individual user. That saied, it would be nice to have some kind of WoT so that one can announce his delta contact publicly and only people for whom a trust relationship can be established pass a pre-check for a contact request, so no spam should become possible.

To be precise: 1. But I get a lot of penis enlargement, and blue pills offers. Also requests to "verify" my address to receive packages, I'm not aware of.

The issue is, that most effective traditional e-Mail spam filters introduce delays, that many users deem unacceptable for a chat.

#deltachat

While onboarding is extremely easy, the real challenge is to find initial contacts or circles to chat with. There is no discovery and no central registry. Every new chat profile is private and nobody knows about it other than your contacts. So we are curious. What is the current number of chats (1:1 or group chats or channels) you have with #deltachat apps? Not contacts but chats you have read or wrote something into, in the last months.
If you are not using delta, please ignore this poll :)

Good news among the bad news!

If the recent #0day attacks against Linux kernel+servers were launched against #chatmail relays, privacy of chatting with #deltachat is preserved. Why? Because we already assume the server could be actively hostile, and still not read or see any avatar, names or messages.

Since the March 2.48 zero-metadata releases relays/servers do not see cryptographic identities, and get no chance to launch "machine-in-the-middle" (MITM) attacks.

Several people have asked me to increase the space for messages from 500MB to 1GB on nibblehole.com. Personally, I use #deltachat / #nibblehole, and currently, my messages do not take up more than 300MB. Of course I can change it, but I would have to reserve so-called remote hands to add larger disks and turn off the #server for about two hours. Is it really necessary?

We don't think any institution or state has the right to prevent families and friends from private chatting, physically or digitally. But the Cyber Authority China (CaC) seems to take offense:

- they made Apple remove #deltachat iOS for mainland china

- their great firewall appears to block some #chatmail relays

- if you ask DeepSeek directly about Delta Chat, it doesn't want to talk

It's pretty sad, really. Everybody on this planet needs, and has a human right to private communication.

Yes this is amazingly generous !!
I've only loved #deltachat for a couple of months but will for a long time to come 💜💜💜

We’ve been busy building and releasing but it’s high time to share some major news: @sovtechfund is investing nearly €500K into #chatmail

This 18-month commitment supports chatmail maintainers keeping the core infrastructure secure and evolving, on top of which several apps are built (but not STF funded):

#DeltaChat
@arcanechat
@deltatouch
Parla on Gnome

A huge thank you to the Sovereign Tech Fund for investing in open, secure and decentralized communication!

Parla is no longer depending on DeltachatDesktop to work, it's now able to create, transfer profiles and relays by itself. Looking forward distros to help me draw the best way to ship a separate jsonrpc server, maybe even sandboxed separately from the UI app for security reasons. i'm open to suggestions here :) But hopefully this way we can get the flatpak ready github.com/trufae/parla/releas… #deltachat #gnome #flatpak
