Just returned from a ski tour through western Jämtland. Started from from Storulvån and did a loop of nearly 100km past Sylarna, Helags, Vålådalen and back. Partially off trail. Conditions were ok‘ish. Quite stormy at times. Not a lot of snow and lots of ice.

Water molecules bond at a tetrahedral angle of 109.5 degrees. That angle, repeated at the molecular level, is why every snowflake has six-fold symmetry. The hexagonal lattice structure of ice propagates outward as the crystal grows, with each arm following a closely similar thermodynamic path (small differences due to temperature and pressure over small distances).
