I've discovered #deltachat 🙂 a while ago but only now starting to see the "beauty" in the system.
Would love to create a chat mail relay !

Q: Does it make sense to have a server locally here in New Zealand in my case.
Or would a webserver with a nz domain name be ok even though the server itself might be lin let say Germany....

Suggestions for hosts ?

DeltaChat hat sich ja auf die Fahne geschrieben, dezentral zu sein. Ok, technisch gesehen ist es das ja auch.

Aber wenn als Chatmail Relay immer nur nine.testrun.org eingetragen ist, wiederspricht das nicht mit steigender Benutzeranzahl dem Grundgedanken? Dann hat man doch früher oder später eine Server der immer weiter belastet wird und wenn er ausfällt, wird für viele Delta nicht nutzbar sein. Ja, es gibt die Möglichkeit weitere Relays einzutragen. Muss der Benutzer aber auch erst einmal wissen wie es geht und es dann auch noch konfigurieren. Die meisten 0815 Benutzer steigen da nämlich schon aus.

Wäre es da nicht gut, wenn der Benutzer eine Instanz per Zufall angezeigt bekommt und bei Bedarf selber eine aus einem Dropdown auswählen könnte?

Es gibt broadcast channel, aber nur noch verschlüsselt. Dh dass die Empfangsseite auch Delta Chat oder einen der chatmail.at/clients braucht. Das onboarden gelingt in vielen Kreisen recht problemlos mittlerweile, wenn man vergisst, dass das Email system benutzt wird :)

Als "email-listen-verwaltung" für das Versenden von Klartextmails ist #deltachat hingegen nicht mehr gedacht. Da sind dann eher klassive email programme zu empfehlen, die nicht auf Verschlüsselung fokussieren.

Ich habe festgestellt, dass die Programmierer von DeltaChat die Möglichkeit Broadcast zu erstellen entfernt haben.

Mit der Broadcast-Funktion hatte ich meine Kontakte nach Thema sortiert (Kollegen, Bogenschützen, Verwandtschaft, Besties)

Innerhalb der Broadcasts konnte ich Nachrichten an alle senden. ZB "schöne Weihnachten"

Nach einem Update hat es mir meine ganze Struktur zerschossen!
Warum haben die das gemacht!?
Das hat mich extrem geärgert.

Die Fähigkeiten sind jetzt eher vergleichbar mit SMS. So ziemlich jeder andere Messenger kann das. 🤷‍♂️

True, the email system is not necessarily better than #xmpp ... but please compare with chatmail.at which is fast, ephemeral and secure, with delta inherently being a peer-to-peer E2EE messenger :)

Install party to set up #DeltaChat servers, created several local test servers, and promoted it.

This was our community's final in-person gathering of the year for free software enthusiasts, held privately.
We designated the year 1404 (in the Persian calendar) as the year for promoting free software culture.

Based on this, we organized various events and conferences to introduce this culture, and similarly pursued diverse promotional approaches to amplify the voice of free software.

The adoption of free software has had positive impacts in Iran.
Now, with a record of 500 active Delta Chat servers during Iran's internet blackout period, we made an effort to hold this final gathering.

We have named the new year as the year for promoting decentralized #free_software tools and will continue to pursue it.

May the new year in a free Iran allow us to both host events introducing books like #Ada and #Zangemann, and promote free, decentralized tools.

It took a while but it's shaping up nicely :) Post-Quantum Cryptography and Reliable Deletion, better known as Forward Secrecy, are going to become available in 2026 in #deltachat. For more details, including the recent #fosdem26 talk recording:

Reminds me of SimpleX, if you can add quantum-resistant encryption and easy multi profile management and throwaway (incognito) profiles like simplex then the privacy and anonymity features would probably be on par and I'd consider switching to get away from the far right dev team.
