The fediverse is a strange place to be sometimes. It's an open network where progress happens in fits and starts in random, often hidden, pockets. And the rest don't often hear what's really going on. In the 6 years I've built on #ActivityPub, we've all had to fight for some kind of coordination.
Especially re: the new #SocialWebFoundation (which I've backed as an outside supporter via my tiny company @write_as), you can see something new is happening.

Today, kind of just completely out-of-the-blue, this thing called “The Social Web Foundation” launched.𐕣 C M D R ░ NOVA 𐕣 (cmdr-nova@internet:~$)
I don’t mind if they put ads on their client, but #ActivityPub needs to be completely protected against putting pro-business needs before users.
It does look & feel a lot like corporate takeovers of protocol through ”open” federations.
Set up something that looks like a nonprofit, feed your employees there as ”experts” and then steer the protocol towards serving you instead. Google has done it on the web very successfully.
