The state of Unix/Linux accessibility is even worse then I feared ๐ . Fedora has been shipping with a broken screen reader for NINE YEARS?
Orca doesn't work on any distribution that ships with Wayland by default? ๐ญ (thanks @aral for bringing it my attention)
Do all the distributions and such know that next year they should be accessible?
I can't code and I am not familiar with testing desktop apps, but I would really like to know how I can help to fix this.
(allthough it shows a bigger problem in open source and it's culture)
Luckily the Newton Project should fix this https://blogs.gnome.org/a11y/2024/06/18/update-on-newton-the-wayland-native-accessibility-project/, but still: it shows accessiiblity is often an afterthought.

Fedora has been shipping with a broken screen reader for nine years but the real problem is me
Fedora has an ableism problem but woe to you if you point it out.Aral Balkan
Since desktop environments can always change and many new releases came out since last year, I would like to know which desktop environment you currently use?

โWe ignored accessibility for eight years and still ship with a broken screen reader but youโre the asshole for calling us out on it.โ
โ Sincerely, the folks at Fedora and GNOME
Iโm actually at the point where Iโm wondering why Iโm on this platform and whether Iโm actually doing more harm than good by showcasing it in my videos and talks and screenshots, etc., given this toxic culture.
But does a better free alternative even exist? *sigh*
It means any Linux distribution that ships with Wayland by default (any distribution that ships the default configuration of the two major display environments โ GNOME and KDE โ which ship with Wayland as default by default) like Fedora, Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, etc., are inaccessible to disabled people who need a screen reader in order to use a computer.

โJust because we donโt consider lack of accessibility to be a blocker doesnโt mean weโre ableist.โ
โ Open Source folks in my mentions.

There is a patched Mutter package on Arch's AUR which allows you to enable fractional scaling for XWayland applications.
No more blurry XWayland applications!

Great work @matt !
Looking forward to work with you again next year and ship this!

Switch to #linux for #xscreensaver, lol. Screensavers are so good here.
Anyways apparently #fedora40 uses #wayland ? So I followed this guide: https://www.linux.org/threads/xscreensaver-under-wayland.43543/ to get xscreensaver running. You beaty.
I might make a PR to xscreensaver for native Wayland support when I'm older. And can figure out how to compile a C program.
I've been on #X11 for past 28+ years, but used different WMs over time: #twm, #fvwm95, #e16, #gnome, #compiz, #xmonad and #awesomewm.
I'm migrating to #Wayland and need a wm which would ease the move. Requirements are: tiling, no window decorations, keyboard driven and config driven.
I rediscovered #i3 == #sway which check all my boxes and use common config. After some tweaking, I got it working well with my keybindings and usage patterns.

i3 - improved tiling wm
i3 is a dynamic tiling window manager with clean, readable and documented code, featuring extended Xinerama support, usage of libxcb instead of xlib and several improvements over wmiii3wm.org
Here is my new GNU/Linux distribution guide about Debian KDE 12, the right GNU/Linux distribution for professional digital painting in 2024! Also about three major problems with GNU/Linux distros that will drive away all professional artists, IMO, and how I got kicked out of the Fedora KDE ecosystem with F40, which imposed Plasma6 and Wayland. I hope it helps other artists here!
