By mid-summer there were 2,465 cases of measles nationwide, already surpassing last year’s tally of 2,289. Ninety-three per cent of those who contracted measles were unvaccinated or had unknown vaccination status. It has been the worst year for measles in the US since 1991. The combined MMR vaccine was introduced in 1971 to spare parents from making multiple trips to the doctor. Announcing a “gold standard” for childhood vaccines in the Oval Office, Trump, who has long questioned the wisdom of combining inoculations into one jab, linked the MMR vaccine to autism. He said the number of recommended vaccines for children should fall from 18 to 11, jabs for hepatitis B, Covid-19 and influenza no longer advised by the federal government. “Decades ago, children received only a small fraction of the vaccines required today. In those times, people were much healthier and of course the high rates of autism now observed did not exist. There’s a reason for such epidemic rates of autism,” he said. Trump said his own children had received their vaccines in five doses even though making five trips to the doctor was “inconvenient”. “Essentially they get 20 per cent,” he said. “It’s inconvenient, it’s five stops.” He added: “They do say that giving individual MMR, there is no impact. In fact they’ve said how safe it seems to be. But I heard when I put them together they can be explosive.”
