I live a couple of miles from the Ohio River, where the river represented the border between freedom and slavery.
This painting honors John P Parker, who lived just 7 miles from my home in Ripley, Ohio. Born into slavery, Parker learned to read, bought his freedom, owned his own business and helped hundreds of slaves cross the river.
His home is depicted on the far left of the painting.

'Devastating': Senators name 338 rural hospitals that could close if Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act passes, including 11 in #Ohio, 35 in #Kentucky, INCLUDING THE HOSPITAL THAT SAVED MY WIFE PENNY last August when she had her widow maker heart attack.
Penny would be dead if not for our rural hospital, there is no question about it. She barely made it there alive and then, already incubated.
According to her chart, she arrived at our nearest rural #AppalachianOhio ER at 6:53 by ambulance and was in life saving surgery by 6:57. Surgery was over by 7:07 and she was out the door and on the way to university hospital at 7:12. She barely made it there alive and underwent more surgery. #Hospital #OBBBA #Budget #HealthCare #OBBB
