Wow, Appassionato, I've just listened to your ๐Ÿ†• podcast ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ on the #US "#Chernobyl" incident in #California, *The Secret #NuclearMeltdown Above #LosAngeles".

And I'm deeply impressed.

Yes, #CA, not #ThreeMileIsland (#TMI), as most #US-savvy people will instantly think of. It was up to ๐Ÿ‘‰250 times as toxic..

Actually, part of my family's oral history is that my dad's cousin had been on site in a Californian nuclear facility as a young physicist during a severe incident.

She died of leucemic in 1963.

I wasn't born yet, so I never learnt the exact details. What I do know, is that since then my dad and his parents always fiercely opposed any use of nuclear technology.

For some time, I believed the whole story to be a fantasy - until I read

about the Santa Susana incident some years ago, when the whole story suddenly became more plausible.

Unfortunately, all relatives from this side of the family have meanwhile passed, so it will remain unclear what actually happened when my dad's cousin was in California.

Sorry for your loss, but, wow, that you have a family connection to that nuclear disaster is amazing.

OFC, IDK if your relative was based in #CA, but if you listen to the whole pod of @appassionato, I'm quite sure that you will finally find out how and why it happened.
The coincidence of your relative's plight and the #SSFL incident are just too much, also the whole industry seems to have had #UCLA as the nucleus of this economic Diamond ๐Ÿ’Ž,...

As I said. I can't say for sure if Claudia (my dad's cousin's name) was truly present during the incident nor that her death from cancer was related to it.

The only things certain are that she was a physicist, that she was in California in 1959, that she died of leucemia and that all elder relatives swore that she was in a nuclear facility during an incident.

The podcast is ai generated, so I won't listen to it, but there are more sources.

If you know her first and last name and (possibly) any address or her social security number, it is feasible to find out more about your "great cousin" (I guess).
Even though 1963 was obviously pre-WWW, a lot of high-school and college year books have been scanned posthoumously (some time ago, I checked out DJT's at the military academy he went to), which is another starting point.
Also,...

...there is the Freedom of Information Act (justice.gov/oip/freedom-informโ€ฆ.)
And, last but not least, a lot of Americans are into #Genealogy. Locating any offspring of your US relatives might be enough as a starting point.

It seems like a fascinating story.

(I am aware that you probably know many of these possible leads, but as IDK which ones... ;)). //

Sometimes a fight has to be fought.

This is a need-to-know for all US residents.
It happened once--it can happen again.

"This is need-to-know for all US residents"

But apparently nobody is interested...

"It happened once--it can happen again."

It nearly happened again last month, when Sandy Fire almost breached the perimeter of the contaminated facility. What if the next wildfire is not contained?

in reply to HistoPol (#HP) ๐Ÿด ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ ๐Ÿด

The fight has been fought.

A local resident, mother of a girl who contracted leukemia twice in her first 9 years, gathered 750,000 petitions for the government to clean up the site.

The result - you can guess...

The Beads of Courage 9min video is about her fight.

It is based on the documentary In the Dark Valley (2021).

No, I didn't see it.
It is great to hear from you again in this respect, too.

You obviously know quite a few things about #AI.
Toxic waste and government cover-ups are something completely different.

I do use AI, for some time even quite intensely. So I know as well as you how bad it can get in some areas regarding hallucinations.
I found your podcast well-done "Infotainment", if I may say so.

Therefore, it concerns me quite a bit when @mina...

...@mina thinks that a piece could be AI generated.

Is your pod about the #SSFL incident #AI generated or is #AI only used for the synchronization of foreign languages, as Google states in the information section?

@appassionato

in reply to earthling

So: To make it clear:

You took the Emmy nominated documentary

inthedarkofthevalley.com/

and fed it to a machine to turn it into a podcast, and then had the audacity to slam a

"Copyright: ยฉ TheEarthGazer 2026 All Rights Reserved"

on it.

I realised after a few seconds, the podcast was machine generated and stopped listening.

As far as views are concerned, I am not surprised, it hardly has any.

There are 20 millions of video uploads to YouTube per day.

@HistoPol

in reply to Mina

Getting videos into people's feed is hard and consists mainly in building an audience, a task that can take months or years and may simply fail.

Whilst a few months back, "ai" generated slob used to flood everyone's recommendations, at least on my start page, they have basically disappeared completely, and rightly so.

If you want to raise awareness for the issue, which is a noble cause, I'd recommend, you make something of your own.

Appassionato/Earthling:

Is Mina's description correct? --If yes, I'd suggest that painstakingly explain why and how you transformed the original documentary in the "show notes."
I think, you really die a nice job transforming the documentary into a pod dialogue. Which tools did you use?

Also, did you fact check the output before the dialogue conversion.

Oh, and I'd remove the copyright.
It might even be an infringement, as you might be earning money from the clicks.

I would not call the story of child cancer due to government coverup an infotainment...

Anyway, the detailed summary of both the brief video and longer podcast is available on my account here.

in reply to earthling

"infotainment"

Me neither, not, if you phrase it that way.
However, you took the original documentary and converted into a podcast format of a dialogue (possibly) letting the #AI explain through this format the difficult chemical, physical, and geological terminology. Also, my "gut feeling" is that the AI slightly dramatized the narrative regarding its wording, but not knowing the original, it is a guess.

"Surely, you're joking Mr Feynman" und "What do you care what other people think"

Mir macht es einfach viel SpaรŸ, Angela Collier zuzuhรถren. Von daher werde ich bei ihren Videos nicht ungeduldig.

Nicht alles, was eine Person nervt, ist gleich ein Trauma oder eine Stรถrung.

PS: Die Astronomin, die du meinst, ist das Dr. Becky?
