Meine Kurzfassung ist: warum sollte sich Russland die EU (oder auch nur signifikante Teile - Ausnahme sind "Korridore") ans Bein binden wollen.

Point 4 is quite ridiculous if you look at a map that shows the russian (gas) pipeline infrastructure - 95% goes in western direction.

And 95% of the pipelines are empty because of sanctions.

I know Ukraine is not (yet) part of the EU, but is it not part of Europe?

I continue to think that Putin is trying to rebuild the former empire that Stalin ruled. Make Russia Great Again.

During Soviet days, Russia dominated eastern Europe: Poland, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Yugoslavia, etc., often by putting down revolutions (e.g., Hungary, 1956 and Czechoslovakia, 1968). Is Putin not thinking to restore Russian influence over eastern Europe?

Maybe EU is not that important anymore, but NATO is and has been Russia's adversary since its' founding, which basically means that EU will not be the only target. And if hybrid warfare is more efficient, then we are already at war since Russia is pulling all strings it can, including sabotage, espionage and of course political influence through, but not limited to social media

Russia may be NATO's adversary but NATO is not Russia's adversary. Russia has always wanted peace and even asked to join NATO when it was a peace organisation rather than a war organisation. The US has been at war with Russia since Russia did not take orders from them after WWII. Russia has never cared that much about our wars. We have a war based economy and since WWII the US has invaded another country on average every other year whereas Russia did invade Afghanistan and Georgia... but out propaganda says "Russia bad" so those who cannot think for themselves see Russia as bad.

Peaceful US wars since the end of the Soviet Union -
Iraq
Somali
Bosnia
Haiti
Kosovo
Afghanistan
Yemen
Iraq
Pakistan
Somali
Libya
Uganda
Niger
Iraq
Syria
Libya
Yemen
Israel
Evil aggressive Russian wars since the end or the Soviet Union
Georgia
Transnistria
Tajikistani
Georgia
Ukraine
Syria
Central African Republic

The evil Russia is so much worse than the nice friendly US...

Just to throw in my 2 Euro-cents into the discussion:
I see people complaining about the EU a lot, and a lot is justified,
but for me its main purpose is to build a counterweight to the almighty USA.
Both are now a conglomerate of states - the USA is just way more fused together than the still new EU.
The next economical fusion will be the BRICS.

I used to work with a guy who immigrated to the US from Russia. He said he thought Putin's popularity is a result of the fact that Russians see him as a strong leader, a tough guy. If his career depends on being seen as tough, then being snubbed by Ukraine is intolerable.

In other words, I'm suggesting that the invasion of Ukraine was a political necessity for Putin, not a military necessity for Russia.
