Tunde #Onakoya has completed a 60-hour #chess #marathon, aiming to set a new #Guinness World record for the longest chess marathon. For 60 hours in the heart of New York’s Times Square, he battled opponent after opponent, fueled by determination and a mission to raise $1 million for children’s education in Africa. “Doing this for the dreams of millions of children across Africa without access to education,” the chess master and founder of Chess In Slum Africa says. For this cause, Tunde initially aimed to play for 58 consecutive hours.

But after playing for 58 hours and breaking the record, he pushed further for 2 more hours, making it 60 hours. “We’re pushing to 60 hours guys. We’re not stopping yet. Let’s keep going.” he said.

Russia funneling weapons through Libyan port, eying gateway to Africa

#Russian vessels have been unloading thousands of tons of #military equipment in the eastern #Libyan port of #Tobruk this month after repeated visits by #Russia’s deputy defense minister Yunus-Bek #Yevkurov to Gen. Khalifa #Haftar, the strongman running eastern #Libya.

The #shipments, arriving from the Russian-controlled port of #Tartus in #Syria, contain towed #artillery, armored personnel carriers and rocket launchers according to video released by Libyan news site Fawasel Media.

The equipment may in part be used to sustain Russia’s growing military presence in eastern Libya, but are also likely destined for countries further south in Africa like #Niger, #Mali and #BurkinaFaso where Russia has ties to leaders of recent coups.

#Art #history has long emphasized the glories of the Byzantine Empire (circa 330–1453), but less known are the profound #artistic contributions of North Africa, #Egypt, #Nubia, #Ethiopia, and other powerful African #kingdoms whose pivotal interactions with Byzantium had a lasting impact on the #Mediterranean world. Bringing together a range of masterworks—from #mosaic, #sculpture, #pottery, and #metalwork to #luxury objects, #paintings, and religious #manuscripts—this exhibition recounts #Africa’s central role in international networks of #trade and #cultural exchange. With artworks rarely or never before seen in public, Africa & Byzantium sheds new light on the staggering #artistic achievements of #medieval Africa. Draft continental #strategy on free movement developed

Free Movement of Persons is an integral part of the #African #integration and along with the African #Passport is one of the flagship projects of #Agenda #2063.

Pursuant to this goal of integration, in January 2018 the Protocol to the Treaty establishing the African #Economic #Community relating to free movement of persons, right of residence and right of establishment was adopted by the #AU Assembly. This was followed in March 2018 with the Agreement Establishing the African Free #Trade Area, the Protocol on Trade in #Goods, the Protocol on #Trade in #Services and the Protocol on Rules and #Procedures on the #Settlement of #Disputes.

As a follow up to this, the #AfricanUnion (AU) and the Regional Economic Communities ( #RECs ) have developed a draft joint continental strategy to accelerate the Right of Entry for the Protocol to the treaty establishing the African Economic Communities relating to the Free Movement of Persons, Right of Residence and Right of Establishment. The strategy aims to ensure that RECs and Member States popularise and promote the adopted African Passport as one of the key #mechanisms through which free movement of persons will be realised.
