"Polar Elegy

An elegy, the aurora writes,
Her pen a comet’s trail,
Her ink a cosmic palette,
Her words a silent soliloquy
Inscribed on the parchment of night.
A requiem, she composes,
Her notes a constellation’s song,
Her rhythm a planet’s pulse,
Her melody a celestial refrain
Echoing in the polar silence."
- Dan Higgins

The Green Dance

22:30 on a cold night in late September. After an hour of standing in the middle of a field, shivering even though our clothing was warm, waiting for the predicted #aurora to appear we were finally rewarded with this lovely display.

Þóroddstaðarkirkja¹ near Kaldakinn, NE #Iceland.

"The heavens have opened and out of the blue
Heralded, like a queen, across the night
The Northern Lights come marching into view"
- Cecil Day-Lewis

Red #aurora is quite rare and usually associated with intense solar activity. When charged particles react with less concentrated oxygen at greater altitudes (300-400 km/180-250 mi) it glows at higher wavelengths, creating red.

North-eastern #Iceland.
