Red Aurora over Poland

Northern lights don't usually reach this far south. Magnetic chaos in the Sun's huge Active Region 3664, however, produced a surface explosion that sent a burst of electrons, protons, and more massive, charged nuclei into the Solar System.

If you are out looking for #NorthernLights #Aurora #AuroraBorealis or for that matter #SouthernLights #AuroraAustralis and you are in the right place at the right time but can't see much, a massive tip is to look at the sky through your cameraphone.

The camera on the #Fairphone5 is OK, not up to iPhone 13pro, but it turned an area of not very remarkable sky (a hint of what might be dust or thin streaky cloud) into convincing aurora. And probably only a tiny proportion of that is #AI I suggest

I've never posted an image like this before, the colours are mental! My husband lit the Longstone with a torch as the sky erupted in pinks and greens. This is in the darkest part of the Island which is campaigning for Dark Skies Status, so there was no light pollution.
The colours were visible to the naked eye.

Not only did I not have catching the aurora in southeast Kansas on my bingo card, I did not expect that I would be taking so many photos of the aurora towards the south, or during twilight.

Also had the surreal experience of it being bright enough at one point to be able to read the markings on my camera!

Made it back home in time to catch some views of the fading aurora from Missouri en route and at our home in Arkansas.

Absolutely unreal experience!

About an hour ago, the sky turned blood red over Bavaria, Germany. It's the first time I've ever seen an #Aurora in my life. It was so bright to be easily visible with the naked eye. An absolutely jawdropping experience. 🖖😳✨
