Aurora borealis forms an unusual spiral or folded loop structure in the night sky over a snow-covered black spruce forest in Fairbanks, Alaska. Bright green curtains of aurora curl back on themselves in a circular formation at upper center, with additional ribbons extending outward to the upper right. A diffuse purple-gray glow from Fairbanks light pollution occupies the right portion of the sky. Snow-laden black spruce trees are silhouetted across the lower half of the frame, their tips reaching upward into the aurora. Stars are visible in the darker upper left portion of the sky.
