“#Taiwan’s opposition-controlled legislature passed changes on Tuesday that are seen as favoring #China and diminishing the power of the island’s president.

The changes pushed by the opposition Nationalist Party and its allies give the body greater power to control budgets, including defense spending that the party has blocked in what many see as a concession to China”

Week one in the new administration in #Taiwan, things are getting a bit concerning. We have on one side opposition parties tried to expand the legislative power

And separate China holds large scale military drills

China propaganda machine also putting pressure on Taiwanese entertainers working in China to conform

It's incredibly distracting and overwhelming situation...Taiwan gov should keep their vigilant eyes on all fronts

There has been an increase in the number of Taiwanese worried about the risk of war but this worry should be seen in the context of a threat which has existed for decades

"Taiwanese have been concerned about war for decades, but that worry does not dominate their daily lives. Even though the likelihood of war objectively appears much higher now than it was in 2021, Taiwanese are not panicking."

An estimated crowd of 30,000 people gathered outside Taiwan's Legislative Yuan to protest against the KMT's attempts to force through legislation that would grant sweeping powers to the legislature and undermine Taiwan's democracy

While Taiwan swore in its new president, Lai Ching-te, on Monday, many just 126 kilometers across the strait in mainland China's Fujian province were unaware of the inauguration — or even sure who the man Beijing has described as a "dangerous separatist" was. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2024/05/21/asia-pacific/politics/taiwan-inauguration-strait-china/ #asiapacific #politics #taiwan #china #laichingte

The democracy of Taiwan changed president earlier today.

Taiwan, who has had proper democracy for a while now, is not only seen as a very strong finance center (part of the “4 Tigers”, most of the hi-tech chips in the device you use to read this are made in Taiwan), but also have the most LGBTQ+ friendly, and also gender-equality focused legislation in south-east asia, with the parting president of 8 years being a woman and also a minister who is non-binary.

All of their progress would be snuffed out if invaded by a very large country close to them.

"In 2010, the Baishatun pilgrimage drew around 5,000 registered participants; this year, nearly 180,000 pilgrims signed up, a figure that doesn't include the tens of thousands who joined informally along the way." https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/03/world/asia/taiwan-religion-mazu-pilgrimage.html #religion #Taiwan

1. The West doesn't "protect democracy" anywhere.
2. #Taiwan is not a country, it is a province of #China.
Note that over 90% of Taiwanese are ethnic Han, & speak the same language as the mainland, have family in both places, often visit / study / travel /work in the mainland. Yes, there is a small minority of left overs from China's civil war who have never forgiven the mainland. Yes, there are US funded individuals and organisations in that minority.

#US intelligence officials assess that #Russia and #China are working more closely together on military issues, including a potential invasion of #Taiwan, prompting new planning across the government to counter a potential scenario in which the countries fight in coordination.

“We see China and Russia, for the first time, exercising together in relation to Taiwan and recognizing that this is a place where China definitely wants Russia to be working with them,"
