The email at 5:09 pm asked him to explain why he shouldn't be suspended by 5:10 pm or it would go into effect at 5:11 pm.

NBC News reports: "Columbia was the first elite institution [in the U.S.] struck by protests in support of the Palestinian cause, with students demanding that the school divest from investments in weapons manufacturing and that support Israel amid the backdrop of the Israel-Hamas war, in which more than 34,000 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip. Protests spread quickly last week on campuses from coast to coast, resulting in mass arrests and crackdowns."

It adds up to profound questions over what it means to be a young Jew in America in 2024. For some, the overriding feeling is one of fear and pain. Others have joined with the protesters, seeing the opposition to the war in Gaza as an opportunity to live out Jewish values taught growing up about justice and the value of human life. Pretty crazy time to be on a college campus right now, Umich's "liberation zone" on the diag has grown in size, as has the police presence. The movement will not be stopped.

People outside the US really have no concept of what it's like inside that country. They haven't for decades.
I try to keep this in mind whenever I read about events in another country. We always see such a tiny slice of the situation.
New York City police have arrested more than 100 people protesting Israel’s war in Gaza on the campus of Columbia University. A student group called Columbia University Apartheid Divest set up an encampment on Wednesday to protest the school’s “continued financial investment in corporations that profit from Israeli apartheid.” University President Minouche Shafik warned demonstrators that they were not allowed to set up tents and occupy the grounds before police started forcibly removing them. USA Today has more on the ongoing protest.
