Whilst I'm very tempted to agree that citizens might be asked to pass a simple test on politics before being allowed to vote, the problem stems from the media who report lies as facts.

The broadcasting of interviews with ill-informed voters should be banned, and every political interview should be monitored by academics and blanked (as with profanity) or even terminated when judged to contain an outright lie.

and whilst we're on... What can be done about the likes of Murdoch owning and steering the media for their own benefit?

I've lost count of the number of people I know who parrot media sound bites without thought or criticism. (I'm flinching now, thinking of the "We've got to live with it..." trope... which many took to mean there was no need for mitigations... GAH!)
