Every day for the last 50 years, the oil and gas industry has brought in $3 BILLION in profits. Not revenues. Profits.

EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.

We need system change NOW.

It is one thing to take inspiration from ancient religious texts.

It is a completely different thing to take them literally.

If the authors of those texts had known what we know today about physics, cosmology and evolution their messaging would likely have been quite different.

We live on a rare, small planet in the habitable zone of a stable star.

We are part of nature and have an extended family of millions of species.

All we need to do, is fit in.

AlJazeera: Gaza Civil Defence issues #HeatRisk warning to displaced Palestinians

As temperatures soar in the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian Civil Defence has warned that conditions are ripe for “the expansion of the spread of epidemics & diseases among [displaced Palestinians], especially among children & pregnant women”.

“Drink plenty of water, try to ventilate the place, keep children away from the sun’s rays, especially at peak heat times, & be sure to wipe their bodies with cold water constantly”, spokesperson Basal said in a statement on Telegram, speaking to the thousands of displaced Palestinians currently sheltering in tents.

Imagine if we could spend two and a half TRILLION dollars to slow climate change, protect endangered species, re-wild the planet, and bring billions of people out of poverty while promoting equality and social justice.

But where could we possibly find that kind of money? 💵 💵 💵

Comedy can run the risk of merely distracting people from the serious climate challenges before us or trivializing the problems.

But comedy also has – and continued to be – a transformative power to educate and motivate people on very heavy and serious topics like #climatechange

The Financial Times and Reuters have taken down advertorials paid for by Saudi Aramco that showcased the oil giant’s preferred climate solutions.

The content, which was produced by FT and Reuters’ in-house ad agencies, disappeared following a February 20 complaint to UK regulators that the FT ads mislead readers by depicting the world’s biggest oil company as a climate champion. #ClimateChange

The human implications of the climate crisis are stark when bodies start piling up over natural resources. Less apparent is the burden it imposes on day-to-day life, especially those of women.

While South Sudan isn’t in an official war, peace remains dangerously fragile. And it is water—or the lack thereof—that is ominously sowing the seeds of future conflict.

Read this from Ryan Biller who traveled to the region to report.

Remember that this is a choice — a choice that has been made for us. It doesn’t *have* to be this way.

Did any of us consent to this? Are we consenting to it now?

We can’t opt out. But can we opt in, and force a different choice?

In Vietnam, farmers reduce methane emissions by changing how they grow rice

Happy birthday to #geochemist Charles David Keeling (1928 - 2005) whose decades long observations of CO2 in air samples from Mauna Loa Observatory were some of the 1st direct data to show the human contribution to greenhouse effect & global warming. The 'Keeling Curve' (in copper & red) shows both the seasonal variations (the wiggles) & the strong upward trend with time as the greenhouse gas built up in the atmosphere. 🧵1/

I hate articles like this. A vegan shopping bag toting, straw refusing person is not going to do jack for the #ClimateCrisis

Instead of writing about actual solutions to #ClimateBreakdown like going after oil producers, pointlessly large car manufacturers, fast fashion, or Amazon. The tail wagging writers doing the billionaires bidding has once again pinned the problem on you, the consumer with no agency except to pick one brand of potato chip over the other in a desperate attempt to reduce your plastic by micro grams while Bezos has bridges removed so he can float his yacht out to sea.

#MediaIsComplicit in #ClimateChange from doing Exxon's climate denial bidding back in the day to obfuscating the real problem now.

Someone posted the following article a week or so ago. It touches on a topic many here might understand. Climate risk includes systemic shocks could trigger a break down in the global and even national economies. Locality is an insurance policy.

“Then there are things that can be done quickly, and locally. Communities that “had been doing some of this work before the pandemic hit were better able to adapt” to the 2020 disruptions…”
