Today, we "access the Internet" thru ISPs, companies dedicated explicitly to providing that access.

But it was not always so.

Originally, the Internet worked over regular old phone lines. Not "data plans" in the phone service ... the exact, literal, same thing as regular phone calls.

Humans physically called a phone number, and then let their computers use the phone.

I want to know of any projects in the works, large or small, trying to develop a new alternative Internet (or just an alternate connection to the existing Internet) that uses something like this, that allows people to connect to the Internet without the use of any ISP.

That could be by cell phone calls, or by Ham radio (I know there is some kind of Ham Internet already), or etc.

Chatting to people already I have had FLUFFS (Lithuania) and WINDY PUFFS (Canada) both of which are SUPERB.

Are there any others? Will there be enough to make a World Map of Dandelion Names?! 😃
