View From The Top

Near Bolungarvík in the Westfjords of #Iceland is a 638m/2093ft high mountain named Bolafjall.

A road was built to the top in 1986 for a radar station and in 2002 it was opened to the public. In 2022 an observation deck was added.

The view across Ísafjarðardjúp and Denmark Strait is astonishing. A fishing boat is lending scale. Hornstrandir Nature Reserve was clearly visible on that day.

A close up photo of Grænahlíð, or the Green Cliffs, and specifically Rytur about 20 kilometres away which is a popular destination for hikers. Grey layered rocks are dropping almost vertically to the sea.

The drive down from Bolafjall to almost sea level. It's a dirt road with snow poles on the inside edge, and a sheer drop on the left down into a valley far below. A very tight hairpin bend is visible ahead, this has a short barrier on the outer edge. The valley beyond is U-shaped and glacial, clothed in autumnal colours. Waterfalls and a meandering river can be seen.

Got The Hump

A magnificent humpback whale surfaces for a breath before deep-diving again to feed.

We were aboard a converted whaling trawler, one of a fleet of '70s oak boats that have been lovingly restored and converted to carry tourists out into the bay.

Armed only with our cameras, we had a wonderful day.

A set of four colour photos of a humpback whale taken during a whale-watching expedition. The first shot is of blue sea with the blowhole of a whale above the surface, its back shiny with water.
The second shot is soon after the first; the nostrils of the blowhole are still visible but the dorsal fin and hump are now above the surface of the water.
The third photo is of the end of the animal's spine and the centre of the tail, the bumps of vertebrae are visible as well as the top of the fluke.
The final shot shows the underside of the fluke as it descends almost vertically into the waves. The white pattern and serrated trailing edge are very clearly defined, even though part of the tail is already underwater. This patterning is how individuals are identified.
