Tales From The Riverbank

Mid-February, and a gorgeous day for following the river as far as we can through the snow-drifts. The main roads have been cleared and the conditions are good albeit with temperatures well below zero C.

Fnjóskadalur, an agricultural valley in Þingeyjarsveit north-eastern #Iceland. Fnjóská, a popular salmon angling river and the longest spring-fed river in Iceland, runs through it.

Between this and the mountains are beautifully sculpted silken snowdrifts, lit from almost directly behind the viewpoint. The snow is clean and untouched, shadows on its surface are the only sign that it's folded into gorgeous convoluted pleats.

Snow Mountain Sunset

Mid-November, and by 16:30 the sun has set. The fading light splashes strong colour across the sky and reduces the shadows to shades of dark blue.

Snæfell - the eponymous 'snow mountain' - volcano at the head of Lagarfljót, a huge elongated lake that drains into the sea in eastern #Iceland.

A beard of cloud is streaming from the top of the volcano, and close inspection reveals a snow cap and patches of ice down the flanks. The foreground is a large body of water, picking up a small reflection of the colours above, and the humped outlines of hills on either shore. These are in darkening shades of blue.
