Telegram is an extreme security risk for its users, its developers and operators, holding data and metadata for over a billion people on central servers!
Our decentralized zero-metadata messaging approach is diametrically opposed to such big-platform designs delta.chat/en/2026-03-31-zero
But there is more: #chatmail relays are zero-state: you can wipe the relay's disks, create a new fresh setup, and users just continue chatting. Operators have actually done this. An *actually* state-less server :)
Delta Chat: Zero metadata, group descriptions, native audio/video calls and much more!
With the latest 2.48+ releases, a chat message reveals close to zero metadata to servers. For cryptographers and messenger enthusiasts, here are the key points on how we turned email very close to ...delta.chat
It's hard these days to find a unifying description, or know about all the people and communities involved in #deltachat #chatmail #webxdc developments. One shared sentiment probably is wanting to develop anti-authoritarian technologies and cultures around it, and being opposed to authoritarian tech policy moves in the West, chat control, age verification, prescribing Google/Apple control, enforcing digital app use etc
It's also a reason we are only posting on the fediverse bridged to bsky.
A note on "#deltachat is going proprietary with #chatmail relays":
1) It's all based on IETF standards, with configuration and custom integration code fully FOSS and documented at: chatmail.at/doc/relay/ with hundreds of permission-free deployments.
2) We know of several alternative relay implementations and deployments
3) Own servers or big email providers can be used (YMMV)
However it's fair to criticize our relentless focus on E2EE, and our moving away from email addresses as identity.
@therainingmonkey You can go "Create profile" - "use other server" - "use classic email as relay", and in advanced options disable "enforce encryption on all relays". You can then receive and write (cleartext) emails and anyone with an email address. Own email servers, or big email providers can also be used.
However, all default onboarding paths lead to strict end-to-end encryption, and the use of #chatmail relays. Mass-users need to have fail-safe onboarding and a fully working experience.
Reminder: There are no accounts in the classic sense anywhere with #chatmail or #deltachat.
It's all private profiles on end user devices which co-ordinate in a #p2p fashion. Chat profiles *use* email (relay) addresses for transporting messages through a federated e2ee-restricted SMTP network.
A chat profile or chat group has zero data on the server. It's radically different from classic email servers, Whatsapp, Signal, XMPP and Matrix servers which host and control chat identity.
as Bob mentions I got a strong whiff of cryptobro when I saw they have a dedicated token site, and you buy usernames with tokens.
I am a user and proponent of Delta Chat (aka #chatmail I looked up Sesssion a bit and they're somewhat similar in concepts, but differ in implementations.
For example, Delta / Chatmail is based on relays (custom email server deployments enforcing encryption policies) whereas Session uses Swarms (5-7 nodes cache an ID range).

The tale of "convenience" is a bit of a trick. A lot of corporate provided services maybe were somewhat convenient a decade ago, but they are now increasingly authoritarian, and people tend to ignore how much time they steal.
Total number of hours spent solving captchas or consent screens with #deltachat #chatmail and #webxdc apps: 0 (zero). Nada. Zilch.
