Does anyone from the #hiking or #outdoor community have any experience with satellite emergency devices like the Garmin inReach Messenger or similar devices?

Quick trip back to UK saw me in the lovely Kentmere Valley on a bitterly cold and blustery day with extensive hill mists. Instead of the intended Kentmere Horseshoe we wisely opted for the lowly Yoke and Sallows instead. Kept below the cloud line. It was enough, a good day with my two daughters

If anyone has actual experience with roof top tents, I would be interested in hearing about it. Not looking for sales pitches or speculation.

I’m not good at finding people on Mastodon. I follow the #hiking hashtag but I don’t really see a lot of British people posting there. Surely, with as many hiking routes there are in the UK, there must be more hiking lovers out there. I would love to find more UK hikers here. Let’s connect!!

September after sunset in the White Mountains National Recreation Area near Nome Creek. The last light of day casts long shadows across the rolling tundra.

▴ Paine Grande

Patagonia is notorious for its relentless winds, but during the final days of our time there, as we made our way toward Glacier Grey, the wind speeds were exceptionally strong—reaching up to 100 km/h, a rare occurrence even for this rugged region. This extreme weather further enhanced the dramatic and untamed atmosphere of the landscape, as captured here during the ferry ride from Refugio Paine Grande back to the Pudeto pier, marking the conclusion of our journey through Torres del Paine National Park.

"Autumn Captures"

It should come as no surprise that Autumn in Colorado is one of my favorite times to go out hiking and photographing. Golden Gate Canyon State Park is an embarrassment of riches for such a goal, and only about 45 minutes from Denver. This series of photos makes me think frequently of scented candles and knitted sweaters. This was my first autumn outing while seriously pursuing landscape photography as a hobby.

In one of these photos, you'll spot some red on the Aspen leaves. Red leaves in Colorado is a rarity, but Golden Gate Canyon State Park always has a few Aspens that always deliver!

September 29, 1983: The higher slopes of Boardman were decked out mostly in the dusky teals of a spruce-fir forest, but streaks of color added bright accents. Now miles away, the ridges and ravines of the Whitecap Range were visible in great detail in the crystalline air.

Though I created an #introduction post when I first joined the Fediverse back in November of 2022, a quick reintroduction is in order…

My name is Jason Coward. I am a #SoftwareDeveloper by trade and the Chief Architect of MODX, an Open Source CMS project I co-founded twenty years ago. I am an enthusiastic amateur nature #photographer, a #drummer, and a father. I live in Durango, Colorado with my son. I also enjoy #scifi, #poetry (especially #haiku), and #hiking.

Winter, night, snow and cold: sounds like an unappealing combination, right? But every step in the dark, every minute in the cold and every moment out there was absolutely worth it. Because some of the best sights reveal themselves in the dark!

July 12, 1983: Not far past the shelter, the Appalachian Trail left the canal path, crossed the B&0 Railroad tracks, passed under US 340, and began the ascent of South Mountain. That is the long ridge I will be following throughout Maryland and into southern Pennsylvania. The climb was not all that bad.

Hello! My name is Amanda. This is my #introduction to Mastodon. Today was just what I needed, went hiking in Tennessee to see if we could find some ice and were not disappointed. This was the first day since last Saturday above freezing in this area and the waterfalls we visited were spectacular. #Hiking #Tennessee

July 6, 1983: The Appalachian Trail passed a massive rock cliff with jagged projections overhanging the trail. Tiny springs were trickling down the face, staining the rock black where it was not covered with vivid green moss.

I just went through my #photos from yesterday and - unfortunately - none of them REALLY worked out the way I wanted. I somehow knew it already on location because it's a difficult season:

The snow melting and leaving a lot of brown patches, a clear blue sky with lots of sun, which is nice for me to see - but not for a cool photo. - BUT it was a good hike, that's what I have to keep repeating to myself

Last year there were two deer in the forrest by my house, now there's fiveof them.
But I for one welcome our new deer overlords, even if they are an invasive species, they'll never be as invasive as humans... 🤔😂

Winter wonderland Taunus! I was a little boy when I saw such amounts of snow the last time in Germany. You forget how relaxing it is to walk in the silence of this puffy white landscape.
Photo taken in the natural park Taunus close to the Feldberg (Hesse, Germany).
