One of my favorite wildflowers is Castilleja angustifolia (desert paintbrush). They brighten up the desert wonderfully! It is a semi-parasite plant usually robbing nutrients from grasses that it grows with. The flowers are actually the green-yellow tubes. The bright red part are bracts.

Our #clematis vines are really taking off and starting to bloom. I planted them last year but they were very much underachievers, maybe because of our long hot summer, and after our one hard freeze this winter I thought they might be dead, but definitely not. This variety is called John Paul II 🤷‍♂️.

The first American lady photos of the year!

Suffered a bit to get these (lol). I was barefoot & had actually rushed outside to get photos of a dragonfly I'd spotted thru the window. Spent another 15 min or so following this beauty around afterwards. And my lawn is full of prickly weeds that are not exactly gentle on bare feet.

Must remember to put on shoes next time. 😂

Further detail: the wings are bright orange with black markings and white spots against black on the outer tips of the forewings. There is a distinctive small white spot in one of the orange panels that distinguishes the American lady from a Painted lady, which does not have that spot.
