It's nesting time for the great blue herons who return to a little white pine woods every year not far from the lake that is my favorite photo hunting grounds. In this photo, two herons occupy a nest of branches they have already completed near the top of a pine. One is siting while the other stands next to it. There is a clear blue sky above.

It's still cold, but tomorrow daytime temperatures will be above freezing and will remain there, probably until next winter. The birds have come thru the winter pretty well.

This is a red bellied woodpecker, with his orange striped head and black and white body, on the suet feeder. There are several pairs in the area. They visit every day, rain or shine and eat suet. They bring their young, as soon as they can fly, to learn how to get easy food from the feeders.
We have a large flock of both house finches and American goldfinches (seen here) in the yard. Goldfinches are vegans and subsist on seeds, so they are quite dependent on us in the winter. Once spring comes, they will still visit, but less frequently.
A female bluebird spreads her wings and leaves the feeder, where 3 males are feeding. The bluebird flock seems almost as large as it was at the beginning of the winter. Soon one dominant breeding pair will claim our yard as their territory and will visit many times a day while feeding their young. Once the young leave the nest, they will eat mealworms from our feeders while learning how to hunt insects. In the late summer, parents and young will leave and will not return until the winter weather returns.
