7 April SAM: Without showing, describe something you've made or seen that is meaningful to you.

"Made or seen" is so vague. Everything?! I attached clear plastic sheeting over an abstract canvas for a dry erase board with meaning. At the other end of scale I remember entering St. Peter's basilica & feeling awe to be in an interior so large that I felt outdoors. Dizzying. I was Catholic. The arms of the colonnade & the volume of that church interior felt all encompassing. 1/2

Hi Rob. Thanks, it's really fun!

I often find myself illustrating something I haven't written yet, putting it aside, and then encountering it again in my writing. It's funny how much credit I can take for things my subconscious does. 😜

For example, I made this image months before I encountered the scene in the writing.

In my mind, Ethereal is moody film noir style animated fantasy with a hint of realism.

@HeliaXyana
thanks for participating in this day; I hope you've enjoyed it.

As a writer and illustrator, do you imagine your stories as animation? Live action? Video games? Do you ever create stories as visual scenes unfolding in your mind?

Hi Eve!

The main tip is, don't drown your enjoyment in all the ways folks will tell you that you "should" be drawing, and don't be tempted to think you need certain kit to get started.

There is such strength in zero budget, zero plan creation. Let it happen.

By all means, hike up the mountain to go paint a sunset, but maintain the freedom to find a certain fascination with your own thumb while you're up there.πŸ‘

#ScribesAndMakers April 6: Talk To Me Day. Featured creator: Lydia Vvinters ( @HeliaXyana )

Hi Lydia!

About two and a half weeks ago, I restarted my drawing practice. I never got particularly far with it before. Any general advice for someone who is basically a beginner at drawing?

5 Apr: How do you decide on price for selling art?

It's been a journey. I multiply the dimensions in inches to give me a gauge of "full retail price"β€”or as I like to call it, "amount that would enable me to make a living." 50% of that is "wholesale" price. I no longer list on any sales sites, only do transactions personally, because I like to offer sliding scale. Buyers choose donation amount & I give a gift in return based on suggested price range.

#ScribesAndMakers Apr 4 - Can you handle praise well, or do you get embarrassed and play your achievement down?

Praise is always to be encouraged whether it's giving or receiving.

More carrot, less stick, makes for a better world. πŸ™‚

4 April: Can you handle praise well, or do you get embarrassed and play your achievement down?

I blush. I do not want to lose perspective & I think humility is healthy for me. The way I learn to accept compliments is that others are free to like what they choose, just as I am. I like my work. I'm excited when others like my work too. The manner & words they choose to express their feelings to me may embarrass me some, but it's good anxiety, blushing is fun.

2 April: What do you want to work on this month?

Life
Try new pain doctor. Prepare to move. Keep in touch with folks. Go see fireflies (45 minutes away & only this month).

Visual art
Continue to inventory paintings & add listings to moving sale page at Rartsy.com

Words
I'm not sure yet if I'll be able to write this month so I at least plan to stream. I talk about anything & work out ideas when I stream, often related to writing projects.

1 April: Analyze quote from obscure influencer/author SA Poscat: β€œIf I wanted to do something people liked, I would post videos of someone kicking me in the nethers. Instead, I write.”

Is "obscure influencer" possible? I am a Proud Unfluencer. The quote puts me in mind of Bukowski: "So you want to be a writer? if it doesn't come bursting out of you in spite of everything, don't do it."

Tough guy explanations of art connect with my problematic past that I seek to outgrow. 1/

#ScribesAndMakers 31 Mar - How did it go? Were you able to work on the things you wanted to?

March went well.

I attended my first author fair and loved it.

Beta readers are starting to turn in the book and asking about the next one.

I managed to animate the narrator scenes (aside from composition) for the Flutter Flower Field animated musical. Still need 80% of the work to be done (Swift and the fox and the wind and the compositing), but I am speeding up as I learn and work things out.

31: How did March go? Any changes you want to make next month?

I don't have much in the way of routines. I have not been able to manage my chronic pain reliably. Every day is different. That often feels discouraging yet I try to make the best from a lack of routine: some small changes every day, every day an experiment. I keep my long goals in perspective, always working towards them. So I know April will be different from March. I hope that I progress.

#ScribesandMakers Day 30 #TTMD @sfwrtr

What's the most difficult thing you had to write? (Difficult because of subject matter or how to convey what you wanted to tell)

@RMiddleton

I would like to ask (& apologies if it's been asked) how you enjoyed today?

I thought it was fabulous. I'd do it again. It makes me a lot less afraid of getting interviewed on a podcast one day, as I'm told will be important to advancing my career. The unexpected questions by people who did know something about me really allowed me to pull together a lot of ideas and discuss them. I got to write a lot, which I love, and avoid writing a chapter I really ought to have written and wanted an excuse not to, so that worked, too. ☺️

Okay, I also like the attention! πŸ˜‡

I've had an unusually full day & while I have computed & fedied today I'm just starting #ScribesAndMakers #TTMD @sfwrtr as bedtime reading.

I feel like many on this tag are in UK & I'm a U.S. night owl & often behind in my participation. I don't expect a prompt answer but I would like to ask (& apologies if it's been asked) how you enjoyed today?

I'm enjoying being part of this tag; nevertheless I'm slow to feel a sense of community. I wonder how today felt for you. Thx ☺️

29 March: What is your proudest or best moment with your creative endeavor this month?

Sleeping all day & skipping this question? πŸ™ƒ

Seriously when I saw this question before going to sleep last night/early this morning East Coast US time, I felt like I didn't have an answer. As happened previously with this group I let the prompt prompt me to more than a post, to action. I accelerated work on a painting sale gallery:

humanissome.neocities.org/Pain…

(New URL & more art to come.)

Every so often, a response to a writing prompt goes too long for me to feel comfortable posting it directly on Mastodon. Today's ScribesAndMakers prompt is one of those. Please check out Graffiti: Art and Praxis.

#ScribesAndMakers 20 March: Do you like graffiti? Do you have an example? Yes.

I love the word.

See @RadicalGraffiti

In summer 1989 in alpine Zermatt, Switzerland, I was surprised to see "Fuck The World" on a side street. The message seemed incongruous to that place & time. I appreciated that it was on a temporary wooden fence enclosing construction. That trip I also learned to love layers of colorful notices pasted all over walls.

Graffiti aesthetic appears in my #Rart paintings.

#ScribesAndMakers 19 March: At what age did you start creating? All kids create. I'm lucky to have 2 "first paintings," from middle school & college, both of which I like a lot.

18: What would your best creative life look like if you stretch beyond realistic, but still keep it plausible?
Possible dreams include a home studio in Mexico, large enough to hold workshops for local & visiting artists; teaching & showing when I travel to my sister's & to friends; devoting months each year to writing.
