“Israel is killing people based on being in the same Whatsapp group as a suspected militant. Where are they getting this data? Is WhatsApp sharing it?”

https://blog.paulbiggar.com/meta-and-lavender/

I feel we have to make this relevant to USians given how low the exchange rate of Palestinian lives to the US Dollar is: Think of it this way, this probably means your credit score is also affected by the people in your WhatsApp groups.

(So, do we finally have your attention?)🤞

it’s a test run for future applications against dissent in the us?

Whats App has a documented history of slow patching of known vulnerabilities along with persistent rumours of them not patching certain well-known issues at the request of governmental security services.

(No, I don’t have any proof of the latter.)

(of course, there's plenty other reasons to leave Whatsapp for Signal or Matrix)

A commenter on this article raises an important point:

"Not to defend Meta, but the quote about WhatsApp groups was a hypothetical from the book “The Human-Machine Team,” not something we know to be happening with Lavender.

(I would hate to drive folks from WhatsApp to less secure apps without solid cause)"

hmm, my credit score is probably already affected by the publicly accessible list of people I follow on Mastodon, and by posts I boost.

Which is actually heavily politically"worse", than the majority of my private/IRL chats and contacts, who are predominantly US sympathizers.

Though, I don't use WhatsApp, because I don't want to support such a system - just as a matter of principle.

No better example of how people as wealthy and demented as Zuck, Musk, Thiel who are all the same orbit of Silicon Valley VC has absolutely no moral inhibition to mass murder.

Same with KSA.

We are simply the undergrowth they sweep away to clear a path to more money and resources.

Funny how we're horrified by China and social credit and yet the west is willing to literally drop a bomb on people based on mere social proximity.

Oh, and that whole using AI to kill whole families because blood begets blood thing? Yeah, that's a war crime.

Why aren’t more people moving to ‘Signal’ and similar apps?

I'd say that TIcToc is the only one that "doesn't" give such info out to them.

@yianiris That’s because their firehose is likely going directly to the Chinese government. They’re all horrible.
in reply to Aral Balkan

They are all corporations subject to operate under a government and within a state. Very few of those, and due to their federation through banking/financing, can become more powerful than governments and dictate back what they do. Their interests as capitalists and the capitalist state, is mutual against those who threaten this dominance.

Then we have states that act as satellites of another, they are not equal, and their agencies feed the satellite agencies.

Tic Toc is better!

I don't disagree that the firehose is going to Chinese gov. I doubt very much they cooperate with the western rats.

For the Chinese it is just as bad as google facebook X .. insta..etc.
