Tales From The Riverbank

Mid-February, and a gorgeous day for following the river as far as we can through the snow-drifts. The main roads have been cleared and the conditions are good albeit with temperatures well below zero C.

Fnjóskadalur, an agricultural valley in Þingeyjarsveit north-eastern #Iceland. Fnjóská, a popular salmon angling river and the longest spring-fed river in Iceland, runs through it.

Volcanic waters

Mid-March, and Seljalandsfoss is still dropping from Eyjafjallajökull even though the temperature has been consistently below zero C for days.

Near the left side is Gljúfrabúi, the waterfall behind a large boulder and within a canyon.

Sunset Serenity

Beautiful Beauly Firth, near Inverness in north-eastern #Scotland at 9pm on a lovely July day.

In the distance is Ben Wyvis (meaning "Awesome Mountain"), topped by Glas Leathad Mòr, a Munro of 1046 metres/3432 feet.

A brief glimpse of the odd, stumpy structure that crowns the pinnacle.

¹Hvannadalshnjúkur - at 2110 meters/6922.5 feet, this is the highest peak in #Iceland and part of the Öræfajökull volcanic system. In the foreground are Skarð and Dyrhamar.

Summer Stillness

Stopping at the roadside to enjoy the tranquillity; the soft breeze rippling the water, the sound of distant birds, the wildflowers in the muddy meadows.

Driving down the old dirt road towards Hrútafjörður, the Vatnsnes peninsular jutting into the still waters before us. Húnaflói, north-western #Iceland

#introduction
Hey everyone!

Mo here, onward and upwards as is always the hope and desire.

I'm a fairly atypical Granny living in #Scotland, with an #Iceland photography obsession. I used to do games graphics many moons ago. I love weather photography, long slow walks getting slower due to stuff, my wonderful sons and my lovely patient partner.

Here's a drop-dead gorgeous shot to start this. Lómagnúpur in southern #Iceland.

Liquid Refreshment

February, and this gorgeous waterfall with its turquoise water and the surrounding black basalt column teeth is a true jewel of nature. The drive and hike were long and difficult but worth every step through knee-deep snow to reach this beauty.

Early Flight

A storm was brewing and this would be the only chance to bring in surface mail and essentials before the strong winds took hold of the entire area. It was already gusting strongly. Watching the pilots complete this landing on a small airstrip surrounded by the water of Pollurinn was tense, to say the least.

Blue Shadows

Mid-February and another lovely cold but clear day in north-western #iceland

This is Reykjafoss at just after midday, the sunlight almost from the south hardly warming its frozen cascades.

A beautiful and peaceful place.

When I took this shot it was my partner's birthday and mine would be tomorrow, so we're celebrating our special days with a long and relaxed holiday driving around Iceland.

Red Sky At Night...

September 2014, and the Holuhraun eruption of Bárðarbunga is well under way. We stopped for the night at a farm to the south of Vatnajökull glacier, and the eruption plume filled the sky.

At 18:45 when the sun set, the afterglow caused by volcanic ejecta - oxides of sulphur and thin clouds of tiny sulphuric acid droplets lofted into the stratosphere - yielded lurid but beautiful colours.

May The Road Rise Up To Meet You

Late November, and the sunlight is breaking through the snow clouds ahead of us.
It's going to be another beautiful day.

Another fresh image specifically for #WaterWednesday. It took some drive to find this spot since Gold Coast is scarce for nice rocks and rock platforms. I have always enjoyed #water action, whooshes and splashes.

I used Hoya ND8 for this shot.

Organ Pipes

Early March, an accumulation of massive icicles bathed by spray and covered in snow.

A heavy snowstorm has just passed, and Gullfoss - the "Golden Falls" - is heavily iced. Fed by Langjökull glacier, Hvítá - "White River" - plunges 11 metres (36 ft) over rocks to a central platform area before dropping another 21m (69ft) into a chasm.
This structure was on the eastern bank of the top cascade.

Skylight

Patiently we waited in the cold and blustery darkness, hoping that the clouds didn't increase, hoping that the forecast was accurate, hoping that we were lucky.
The green lady didn't disappoint us.

Sunbeams

A dreary July day in the south-east of #Iceland. It's been drizzling and raining and, at 19:30 as the sun was going down, some small breaks appeared in the clouds.

What seemed to be a fruitless day for photography was crowned by a lovely display of sunbeams, highlighting Vatnajökull and its glacier tongues, and piercing the ground level mists gathering around the peaks.

Flat Calm

The summer sky reflects in the near-mirror surface of the fjord. The soft breeze gently ruffles a few patches, but the water-birds are unperturbed.

Snow Mountain Sunset

Mid-November, and by 16:30 the sun has set. The fading light splashes strong colour across the sky and reduces the shadows to shades of dark blue.

'Neath Clouds And Northern Lights

On a windy February night, we waited for the skies to clear and the show to begin.
The farm buildings of Grenivík provided some small ground level lights, while the stars danced a duet with the #aurora. Even the approaching snow clouds couldn't hide the beauty completely.

Clutter

Remnants of icebergs floating near the shore of the lake.

These exquisitely carved slivers of ice once fell as snowflakes,
which piled up atop a mountain,
which then became part of a glacier,
which calved into the water,
which the tides and the winds grounded here,
where it began to melt slowly
for me to find.
