We've successfully upgraded our Mastodon server to v4.6.0-rc.1+mementomods-2026-06-13, along with Mastodon Bird UI 4.0.0-beta.1.rc nightly updates.

Mastodon hit Release Candidate this round. The 4.6 release is right around the corner.

This update includes today's latest daily build with 85 new commits from upstream since our last build mementomods-2026-06-07.

What's new in Mastodon core, these are the changes Mastodon Team have introduced us in the latest nightly version we are running:

- Import Custom Filters, the import side of last release's export, so you can move your filter rules between accounts and instances
- Bot notifications can be filtered with a new dedicated policy, separate from regular filtered-notifications handling
- Newsletters can now be viewed individually in the admin UI
- Polls and media attachments can be combined in the same post (the old restriction is lifted)
- Media attachment descriptions raised to a 10000 character limit
- Media attachments now carry duration in their ActivityPub representation, so audio and video duration travels with the post over federation
- Collections continue to polish
- Several internal refactors (typing-statuses representation, sundry test coverage on background workers) that should make future patches smoother
- Changelog now points to the right profile-API documentation

Fixes & improvements

- Account hovercard sometimes not triggering, fixed
- "Unlisted collections" profile section was visible to other users, now properly hidden
- Editing a post failed when the post had both a poll and attachments, the validation check is now consistent
- "Remove me from collection" confirmation dialog copy was misleading, cleaned up
- Missing string for custom filter import added
- Missing heading styles in settings area restored
- Loading or errored emoji in a detailed status display name no longer causes a line break
- Sensitive media card display fixed

- Alerts ("toasts") are now announced by assistive tech
- Column extra buttons moved out of the h1 column heading
- Patched over the worst a11y issues from the "simple" ruby gems

🐦‍⬛ Mastodon Bird UI 4.0.0-beta.1.rc (nightly)

Side-panel and profile polish, plus some small UX wins:

- Compact navigation items (font-size 17px, gap 7px) on screen heights below 1080px so more nav links fit on a laptop
- Navigation menu scrollbar is now minimal (Firefox thin, WebKit 4px) instead of the dominant OS default
- Trends section top margin removed for a tighter side panel
- Trends drop to 2 items on screen heights below 830px (4 items fit above that)
- Dropdown menus are capped to the viewport height and become scrollable on short or zoomed screens
- Avatar follow badge sits above the display name (z-index) so the first row of the status stays clickable (only for forks that have experimental For you enabled)
- Account timeline filters render above the profile header

I've received some questions about my algorithm experiments. First off, I'm building this mainly for myself, since I often don't have time to scroll through posts chronologically and just want the best and most important bits from my social media. It's opt-in and currently only an experiment in my fork.

How the "For you" ranked feed on mementomori.social actually works:

First, the ground rules. Again, "For you" is opt-in on our instance. If you never touch the toggle, your home feed stays exactly as it is: chronological, complete, and untouched. Nothing below applies to you. We never turn it on without your consent, and every setting is stored and controlled by you.

Where the posts come from. The feed ranks the newest ~800 posts and boosts from people you follow. If you also enable "Include posts from people you don't follow," trending posts on the instance get mixed in, roughly one in every four slots, and your scrolling can continue through the trending pool once your own feed runs out.

How a post is scored. Every post receives one score made of four parts multiplied together:

1. Engagement: boosts count 3x, replies 2x, favourites 1x.

For posts from other instances, we use counts from their home instance so federation doesn't undercount them.

2. Your affinity to the author: how often you've favourited, boosted, or replied to that person in the last 30 days.

It's logarithmic, the 5th interaction matters much more than the 50th, so no one can dominate your feed just because you liked them a lot once.

3. Time decay: a post loses half its score every 6 hours. Old posts fade no matter how popular they are.

4. A touch of randomness (±10%) so the order isn't fixed.

Freshness. Every post shown to you goes to the back of the line for 2 days. That's why refreshing gives you new posts instead of showing the same viral hit again and again, and why "Load more" always digs deeper instead of repeating.

Housekeeping rules: boosts show the original post. Your own posts and boosts never appear. Private mentions never appear. Brand-new posts wait 15 minutes before entering so they have a bit of time to gather reactions first.

What it does NOT do: There's no tracking beyond one thing: a list of post IDs already shown to you, which auto-deletes after 2 days. No reading your posts, no content analysis, no machine learning, and no profile built about you.

The weights above are the entire model, and your instance admin can adjust every number. Hopefully, if this project matures, you'll be able to adjust every weight yourself.

Mementomori.social experienced 57 minutes of downtime earlier today. Here's what happened and what we've done about it.

What happened: A large volume of connections from external crawler/bot IP ranges accumulated in a stuck state (CLOSE_WAIT) inside our web server (nginx). These zombie connections exhausted nginx's connection pool and connections per worker, which caused it to stop accepting new connections entirely resulting in ERR_CONNECTION_CLOSED for everyone trying to reach the site.

Why it took 57 minutes: The sole admin available (me) was in a meeting when the issue began, and other admins were unavailable. There was no automated recovery in place to detect and resolve this type of failure.

How it was resolved: Nginx was restarted, which cleared all stale connections and immediately restored service.

What we've done to prevent this:
- Installed and configured Monit, a process monitoring tool that automatically checks all critical services (web, background workers, streaming, database, cache, and nginx) every 2 minutes and restarts them if they become unresponsive
- This means similar outages should now self-heal within minutes, even when no admin is available

I'm really sorry for the disruption. We take the reliability of this instance seriously, and this change should make a real difference moving forward. I'm also planning to apply other mitigations, as some parts of our instance may have been underconfigured.

- "Follows you" badge in account list items (collections lists, follower lists) uses the same dark pill style as in profiles
- Verified link badge in account list items mirrors the profile field verified style: Bird UI's tick icon and accent link color in place of the green gradient SVG
- All badges in account list items drop the core 4px padding so they sit flush in the row

Plus navigation polish:

- Notifications now sits in the second slot of the side navigation menu, right after Home
- Trends heading no longer renders a stray bottom border
