I’ve been seeing a lot of us posting about The Handmaids Tale
But did yall read the book??
Black people are mentioned only briefly, and are described as being rounded up and sent to a colony in the Midwest to die.
Gilead was an all white country.
We aren’t even human enough to be Handmaids.

Have you read Audre Lord's essay, 'We Must Learn to Use Our Power'? (1985)

It reminded me of the arson that tried to burn down Baldwin Hills. It is eerily prescient of the BLM movement. It also paints a harsh picture of the social stew in the rising days of the South African divestment movement.

I searched for this essay, looking for this quote:
" We are also citizens of the most powerful country in the world, a country which stands upon the wrong side of every liberation struggle on earth."

I had seen it elsewhere and wanted context. The essay is a compelling argument that ties the struggle for Black freedom from state violence to the Black African movement to free themselves from apartheid in S.A.

It's a fad to reduce feminist thinkers to bite sized quotes for pinterest inspo. It's another to read their work in total.

A person is talking about their crochet pet peeves in a post (not on Mastodon.)

They mentioned crochet hooks that have seams.

My general rule is: if it looks uncomfortable, it is.
If it's a plastic hook with a huge seam on it or sharp bits... it will likely hurt. Ditto for knitting needles.

If you're new to knitting/crochet, try a friend's needles or hooks. Go to a local yarn store, they might have tester hooks.
Michaels & Joanns will not.

We need to make #Mastodon a #sanctuary

Mastodon has delivered excellence with no #algorithms and good #moderation (I've met a few bad mods- it's #decentralized, to be expected. Also some of the best mods I've ever met are here)

But, it has to get a grip on the #replyguy problem

Everyone knows this, #BlackMastodon and #QueerMastodon have been vocal on the issue for a long time

‘When emancipation comes, it was a shock to a lot of white people in this country to see formerly enslaved people so eagerly embrace democracy—embrace the right to vote. Eighty percent of Black males registered to vote immediately after emancipation and began using the ballot to create real opportunities and power,” says Bryan Stevenson.

“Violence became the primary tool for pushing against that Black participation.”’

in 1920, Mose Norman, a Black man who managed to register to vote tried to exercise his rights in Ocoee, Florida. He was refused.

He took refuge with July Perry, a successful Black businessman. A white mob came to arrest them. Norman escaped, but Perry was lynched.

For July Perry’s heirs, and despite a recent plaque, the violent history of voting can’t be overlooked with the Voting Rights Act having been gutted.
