What would you do if you had half a year completely to yourself? Here's my answer to that question.

I've worked at a fairly leisurely pace. But I did not spend my seventh through twelfth month of unemployment watching TV. My main project since November is almost done now: a state-of-the-art typological, chronological and spatial analysis of a large group of stone axes that nobody had done anything about in 70 years.

Hopefully in a journal soon.

For #MosaicMonday the flooded crypt of the Basilica di San Francesco in #Ravenna.

The Basilica dates to the 10th century and was built on a 5th century church. Due to Ravenna’s marshland and the subsidence of the ground's surface the crypt is permanently submerged by water and nowadays home of goldfishes.

The mosaics belong to the church of the fifth century AD. The crypt is believed to hold the remains of Bishop Neon, who lived in the 5th century.

Check out Frederik's new photos of the Slagsta rock-art panel near Stockholm. This thing is at least 2600 years old.

You can see why major rock art goes unnoticed in normal ancient monument surveying! You need a specialist, like my colleague Sven-Gunnar Broström who made the discovery.

My prehistory lab, the LAMPEA in Aix-en-Provence, is hiring a #PhD candidate on this truly fascinating topic. English speaking candidates are welcome, and the area ain't a bad place to stay :)

I've made a point of going everywhere in the archaeology of the mid-to-late 1st millennium elite, ticking boxes, trying to become an unavoidable scholar. I've excavated a mead hall, a boat grave, a great barrow. I've written about gold bracteates, gold foil figures, jewellery and weaponry. I've metal detected famous sites. And today my big animal art paper came out. I'm confident that this will be cited like crazy moving forward.

The Romans were innovators who created a type of early machine gun. The polybolus, was ahead of its time. It was capable of firing multiple metal tipped bolt projectiles in quick succession. Now the walls of Pompeii have been found to bear scars which are probably a result of this machine. Besieged by general Lucius Cornelius Sulla in 89 BCE during the Social Wars. There are also accounts of the machine from 3rd century BCE. popsci.com/science/ancient-rom…
