A rarely seen bird in our garden: a Baltimore Oriole. He tried to get some syrup, clinging upside down to the hummingbird feeder, with limited success. Don't have an orange in the house 😢.

Me, looking straight ahead. I am smiling, my hair is pulled back and I am wearing purple prescription glasses. My sun conure parrot, Sherbert, is sitting on my shoulder with her beak pressed against my cheek. She is about 12 inches from beak to tail, is mostly yellow and orange, has some green and blue on her wings and tail, she has dark grey eyes and a black beak.
An older picture of Sherbert (last month) sitting at the bottom of her cage which is covered with newspaper. Next to her are the 3 eggs she laid over a 2-3 week period. She'd never had that many while living with me, so it was a shock! Sherbert is a sun conure parrot, is about 12 inches from beak to tail, is mostly yellow and orange with some green and blue on her wings and tail. She has dark grey eyes and a black beak. The eggs are about the size of a quarter, oval and white.

ist es jetzt eine futtersäulen-inspektion oder doch eher eine genauere untersuchung wie sich der deckel öffnen lässt. (dann wäre der zugang viel schneller, als mit dem großen schnabel in den kleinen öffnungen rum zu wuseln). mehrere minuten wurde gerüttelt und gebissen. ich habe das gefühl dieses projekt ist noch nicht beendet ;)

Vultures eat anthrax, botulism, rabies, & cholera for breakfast.

Their stomach acid is among the most corrosive in the animal kingdom, with a pH around 1, low enough to dissolve the bones, hide, & pathogens of dead animals that would kill almost anything else.

A vulture eating a diseased carcass isn't a vector for disease, it's the end of the line. The disease chain ends in the vulture's gut, & that's pretty hardcore.

When vulture populations crashed in India in the 1990s, rotting livestock carcasses sat where vultures used to clean them.

Feral dogs and rats took over the cleanup, both of which actually do spread rabies. Researchers later linked the vulture collapse to roughly 500,000 deaths in India over the following decade.

The same collapse is now underway in sub-Saharan Africa. 6 of 11 African vulture species are threatened with extinction, primarily from poisoned poaching baits.

The animals nobody finds cute are doing more public health work than most of the species we actively protect.
