Ever hear the story of the Afghan man who lived for 700 years?

On his 700th birthday, the great Amir, Dost Mohammad Khan, threw him a lavish party.

And after all the guests had left, the Amir said in confidence, "I am surrounded by enemies."

"What is your secret to be living in such dangerous place for a long time?"

And the man looked at him and said... "It is easy. Change sides."

Not a bad week. Only one stinker this week.

Borderlands (2024)

I came to watch Cate Blanchett.

This movie is supposed to be funny. It is obnoxiously unfunny.

There are some seriously questionable special effects in this movie.

The bloodless PG-13 action is bland and uninspired.

This is a blatant copy of Guardians of the Galaxy, but with the humor and soul removed.

So much talent wasted on this terrible film.

This is one of the worst movies I have ever seen.

Rated 1 out of 10.

Streamed on Starz.

Silent Night was pretty good. Joel Kinnaman is great in the movie. Woo sticks with his tried and true, now classic, style of action and it is a treat for those of us who are a fan of it from his earlier work. But, in a John Wick world, I'm not sure it will work with current audiences.

Rated 6 out of 10.

I wrote a longer review of the movie here:

Tonight's movie is Silent Night (2023). It might not be Christmas, but this should be a treat for a John Woo fan like myself -- I'm hoping it is better than his most recent movie, the remake of his classic The Killer (2024).

It's the 26th anniversary of The Matrix, written and directed by Lana and Lilly Wachowski, released on March 31st, 1999, making cinematic history and forever leaving its mark on the Sci-Fi genre.

Hmmm . . . just looked at the #movies available on #Starz & even at $2/mo "there's no there, there" for me. 🤷

We finally have a new date for Beyond the Spider-Verse: June 2027.

On the one hand, that's hopefully meant they're not treating their animators like shit, as they allegedly did on Across the Spider-Verse.

On the other, it'll be four years after Across the Spider-Verse. This is why we don't do TV style cliffhangers in movies.

Starz is running a special deal. $2.99/mo for three months or $24/yr for a year.

Not bad! I signed up for a year. It'll be worth it if I watch a couple of movies in the year.

Tonight's movie was The Life List (2025).

A movie with a good message that's not too preachy.

A movie that's easy to watch because there's no real conflict.

It's billed as a romance film, but really it's not. The mother-daughter relationship is what makes this movie so watchable. Sofia Carlson and Connie Britton are the hearts of this movie.

I enjoyed this movie.

Rated 6 out of 10.

Streamed on Netflix.

It's official: Ketchup Entertainment has acquired worldwide distribution rights to Coyote vs. Acme. This presumably means it will get a theatrical release, although no plans are currently public.

This year has been a Sandra Bullock kinda year so far.

Premonition (2007)

Tonight's movie was not as bad as the Rotten Tomatoes critics' score says (8%), but it really isn't that great either.

It takes too long to get to the point and by the end of the movie, there isn't a point at all. The movie moves at a glacial pace and eventually dead ends itself.

There was no given reason what what was happening either.

Sandra Bullock is fine in this movie, it's just the movie isn't good enough for her.

Rated 2 out of 10.

Streamed on Hulu.

excellent, enjoyable, funny, timeless yet current, needed, provocative, punk, rebellious, and sweet. I didn't expect this movie & I appreciate it.

This was the worst of the '89 Underwater Creature Features. This movie is just bad, pure schlock.

It takes more than an hour for the creature to show up onscreen. This is disappointing for a creature feature. The creature was meh. The first hour is boring trying to develop weak characters.

The bloody diving suit was pure camp. Miguel Ferrer's character was the most memorable. The use of minitures doesn't look good, but I applaud them for trying.

Rated 1 out of 10.

A good breakdown of Alien: Romulus and lots of cool observations from the movie.

In the collection of Alien films (including those pesky Prometheus ones, but not the AvP films), Alien: Romulus ranks number 3 for me.

Leviathan (1989)

This was a movie that was so bad that it was good. I was really entertained by Leviathan. Sure it’s an amalgamation of other (better) creature feature movies, but it has enough cheese and corniness to redeem itself. The creature was scary enough. The underwater scenes are convincing even if they were filmed dry for wet.

Rated 6 out of 10.

Streamed on Kanopy.

A really good look at the movie The Raid and how it is a true action masterpiece. The part that was particularly interesting was how the camera was used.

Two enjoyable movies this week with one total dud. I spent the week watching "around 90-minutes movies".

#LetterboxdFriday #movies

Happy #LetterboxdFriday !

Death of a Unicorn was worse than expected, and Ash was a mediocre scrip but AWESOME visuals, so I'll definitely be buying it on disc.

Mononoke in 4K IMAX was INCREDIBLE. The only downside was I thought the dub was poor. I'm pretty sure rewatching it with subs will bump it up to 5 stars.

The Maltese Falcon was amazing! Sharp, clever, twisty, funny, charming. I 100% understand its influence.

Outland (1981)

A space western detective story with a badass Space Marshall, O'Neil (Sean Connery) and a snarky Space Doctor (Frances Sternhagen). Peter Boyle is unrecognizable.

The production design reminded me of Alien.

The way people die in this movie is rather explosive. The countdown clock was unnecessary. The special effects did not age well. And sniper shotguns?

I enjoyed this seemingly underrated Connery film, it was really entertaining.

Rated 7 out of 10.

The Silent Hour (2024)

Tense suspenseful thriller set in a confined space. The pacing and editing are sharp and unrelenting. Great cast. Joel Kinnaman and Sandra Mae Frank are fantastic. They were even able to squeeze in a pretty touching scene. It is a lean film at just a few minutes over 90 minutes. An enjoyable movie, recommended.

Rated 7 out of 10.

High Heat (2022)

This movie tries to emulated Guy Ritchie. The look and feel doesn't work. It's charaters try to mimic the off kilter irrelevant charaacters of Ritchie films, but it doesn't work. The dialogue tries real hard to be Ritchiesque, but never comes close. Categorized as action comedy, but wasn't funny.

Rated 4 out of 10.

Two for Olga. One for action (not too bad), Gary the masseuse, the twins and celery beat down. One for the short runtime.

Streamed on Hulu.

Chief of Station (2025)

Lots of things happened. Characters spent many words telling each other what was happening. Yet, I have no clue what happened or why. I came for an action film, but endured 45 minutes of talk before bullets started flying.

If you come to see Olga Kurylenko, you'll be disappointed that she doesn't show up until more than half the movie is done.

The bad guy was immediately obvious as the film opened.

This is as generic as spy films get.

Rated 1 out of 10.

It's like Die Hard, but without Bruce Willis or Alan Rickman.

Though, at 90 something minutes, I may check this one out when it gets cheap enough to rent.

Tonight's movie is Chief of Station (2024). A random pick on Hulu with three criteria:

1) Around 90 minutes (this one clocks in at 93 minutes).
2) Some recognizable faces (Aaron Eckhart, Olga Kurylenko).
3) Action flick.

All boxes checked. Lets see how it goes.
