Back in July, Sidney Reed was recording law enforcement in Washington, D.C., when she was arrested and charged with assaulting law enforcement, because an FBI agent got scratched during the arrest. But it didn't quite work out the way the authorities anticipated. Three times, prosecutors failed to secure an indictment on the federal assault charge, which carries a potential eight-year sentence. Then they switched to charging Reid with a misdemeanor. She pleaded not guilty, went to trial, and was acquitted, with one of her public defenders telling the jury: “You should be livid that the government brought this case.” Here's more from Adam Klasfeld of @allrisenews.

Earlier this week a post went viral on Bluesky that claimed ICE had spent $61,218 on guided missile warheads and explosive components. @WIRED took a look at what might actually have happened (looks like the ICE team entered the wrong procurement code).

Construction began yesterday on U.S. President Donald Trump's White House ballroom. Who's paying for it? The only confirmed donor is YouTube, but other names in the mix include Blackstone, OpenAI, Microsoft, Palantir, Lockheed Martin and Amazon. @BBCNews talked to Richard Painter, chief ethics lawyer in the Bush White House, about why he's concerned about this.

U.S. President Donald Trump wants to double the size of the ICE workforce, but there's a problem with that. More than one-third of new applicants has failed the agency's personal fitness test, which comprises 15 push-ups, 32 sit-ups and a 1.5-mile run in 14 minutes. An email from ICE headquarters to top officials described the new wave of candidates as "athletically allergic." Here's more from @TheAtlantic.

Garrett Graff hopes this weekend's No Kings protests will someday be looked back upon as a turning point. Here's his story for his newsletter, Doomsday Scenario, in which he lists his reasons for hope: Trump's unpopularity, the fact that he can't last forever, and America's historical imperfection. "Today may be dark, but the story of America for 250 years is that — with hard work by good people — tomorrow there is hope it will be better," he writes.
