Good morning Fedi friends!
All eyes are on #Pixelfed this week, as #Meta censored all mentions and links to it.
Last year I wrote about the superb interoperability between Pixelfed and #Mastodon - it was one of my first articles for #TheFutureIsFederated, which inspired me to try out more #Fediverse projects.
If you have friends who are curious about the Fediverse and @pixelfed you could share this: blog.elenarossini.com/the-futu…

The secret ingredient of the Fediverse is the ActivityPub protocol and how it allows networks to talk to each other. See the magic in action!Elena Rossini

I'm lucky to already have a pixelfed.social account. Still, in order not to add to @dansup's server load, I am taking the plunge:
this morning I'll try to set up my own #Pixelfed instance, thanks to the magic of #YunoHost (Pixelfed is in their list of apps).
I'll keep you posted on how it goes!

#pixelfed could play a great role in expanding the fediverse as it's appealing for bluesky users too.
Once they are in , we'll convince them to change microblogging too 🙂

The hardest thing will be picking a domain + username to use for it 😅

IT'S ALWAYS DNS 😆
Currently setting up my #Pixelfed instance via #YunoHost. I thought I had messed something up, turned to another task for 30 minutes, checked back, and things were all in order. Awww the joys and pains of DNS propagation 😅

I tried from Mastodon, GoToSocial, Sharkey... the whole nine yards. Finally added a special permission in YunoHost's dashboard for all visitors - and voilà 😅
I still barely know what I'm doing though - it's mostly spray and pray 🤣

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂ • • •it is interesting how #DNS and #Fediverse apps will "heal" themselves. For example if #Sidekiq goes down, when you restore it, it takes a few minutes for federation to complete
For DNS , #DNSv6 and #DHCPv6 should improve it a little bit

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂ • • •wait until software updates are the problem. I see you're experimenting with lots of software, which makes the maintenance surface quite large.
The more software you run yourself, the more difficult the maintenance, because things do break!
I'd be curious to hear your experience on that point in a few months, you always seem to have great insights.

in reply to Alex Dufournet • • •@alex thank you Alex and yes, touché. Last week I updated my server and mistakenly crushed a maskdns setting that is vital for YunoHost. Thankfully they have a guide to reverse that, so I fixed the issue with a few lines of code but it was pretty stressful.
I now also have daily backups enabled and I'm waiting to see what happens when GtS or Pixelfed have an available update...

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂ • • •it's the biggest drawback I find. Learning new things is fine, spending a little money is fine, but the time spent maintaining each individual system is a lot for my own taste (got two kids)
To me that's the biggest "cost" in my opinion.
We trade convenience for independence.

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂ • • •I used to run on yunohost maybe ten years ago. Then I moved abroad and I didn't want to carry self hosting (I was running it at home, and either needed to migrate to a provider or move country with an extra computer... Not the priority in my life at this point)
When I came back, I did pick it up again, but manually this time.
I bought a cheap refurbished computer, installed a stable version of Debian, and run my services through docker.

in reply to Alex Dufournet • • •@alex I see! On my end, I like the peace of mind of using a VPS instead of a home server... and I love YunoHost's features.
I have only been self-hosting for a month... have zero experience with software updates for Fedi platforms... let's see what happens

in reply to Alex Dufournet • • •@alex see, I had no idea YunoHost has been around for that long! A couple of people recommended it to me in October and that's why I took the plunge.
I hope my experiences help people in the same shoes as me (i.e. non-developers curious about self-hosting)

(aw the arrogance of beginners! I'm just kidding, I barely know what I'm doing and I have infinite respect for REAL developers)
