Quick note: I'm running out to pick up my child from nursery school - I will be offline for the rest of the day (until she's asleep).

For Sharkey power users: I hope my post did it justice.

What is next? I really want to test drive Hubzilla, Misskey, Akkoma and PeerTube, learn how to create bots with @stefan and self-host my own instance via #yunohost ๐Ÿค—

in reply to Elena Rossini โ‚

I've recently set up my own peertube instance ( peertube.existiert.ch/ ) and I like it to share some of my videos and stream to some friends... but so far I haven't found any content I really want to follow on there. I'd be happy if someone knows creators in the vain of "markiplier" or "Hand of Blood" (fun game content), or edutainment creators in the vain of Veritasium or MinutePhysics, which I could follow!
in reply to Elena Rossini โ‚

ah interesting, I always wondered what those instances with reactions are!
I'll have to check out sharkey and misskey and see if I can set up my own server and maybe migrate my mastodon to it and shut down my mastodon. Since it's only me here that shouldn't be a problem. Maybe I have to use an temporary home for my account while I do that though.
The "Tweetdeck" style UI is also available on native mastodon btw, you can change to it in your settings with "Enable advanced web interface"
in reply to leberschnitzel :ha:

@leberschnitzel I'm totally smitten with Sharkey but I would recommend trying it out with a separate account first... and moving to it only if you are a dev with enough tech skills to migrate in case things go south. You seem like an ideal candidate for this :)

Someone just shared with me an in-depth video tutorial of Sharkey, you may want to check it out (sorry for the Youtube link but the alt doesn't work): youtu.be/fQ4Xm92vcq8

in reply to Elena Rossini โ‚

don't worry, youtube links i click redirect to my personal piped instance :chyeah:
starting with a second account first is for sure a good idea ๐Ÿ‘
in reply to Elena Rossini โ‚

@pancakes
I thought firefish was super promising but it never stabilized so I deleted my account there.

Im already established now but sharkey does sound cool.

Maybe thats the place we should be nudging people to who are toe-dipping in the fediverse.

[edit: "tow" dipping != "toe dipping" - an idiom to mean 'testing the water's temperature for suitability for swimming']

@ike my gut feeling is that Sharkey would be an excellent point of entry to the Fediverse for people used to commercial social media... that's what I would recommend to my friends, except: I'm not 100% confident about its longevity. IMHO non-technical people would feel lost if they had to migrate to a new project, so that's why I've been hesitant recommending it to non-devs

@ike We really need to promote other fediverse platforms beyond Mastodon, especially while Mastodon is still working in proper safety features.

Here's something relevant I just posted a moment ago.

@ike I LOVE Phanpy and need to explore GoToSocial. Thanks for the recommendation Stefan!

There is also Iceshrimp. To me it seems quite similar to Sharkey. Are there any big differences?

@ben @mia @stefan

in reply to Oros

@oros I heard about Iceshrimp and I'm intrugued by it. All I know is that it's a fork of Firefish... not sure about the big differences with Sharkey TBH.

Basically, you're saying to Sharkey what I've been saying to all Misskey-type services for 2 years, only in German.
It's nice to have another comrade-in-arms who likes these services.

There's one fear I'd like to allay: that Sharkey will cease to exist. Because Sharkey is compatible with Misskey, but also with the other services of the Misskey family.
you can also import all your posts from mastdon and have them visible in your timeline again (at least this is possible in the Firefish line)

my favourite tools, apart from the antennas, include Drive, where I can also sort my images/files by folder, but also Clips, which I use as a bookmark folder and also sorts everything nicely into folders.

All great things that make life in the #fediverse easier

@crossgolf_rebel Oh it's nice to hear from fellow Sharkey enthusiasts! Thank you for your comment.

Re: longevity, it would make me feel more secure to be on Misskey - because of the project's resources and large user base. It's so heartbreaking to see what happened to Firefish.

Re: importing one's feed, one of the Sharkey devs explained to me that posts with replies and replies to others are a bit broken / don't reference the new instance. But it's a good feature to have

Have you seen this video about #Sharkey?

@pancakes@mastodon.lol Thank you for doing such a lovely article on Sharkey! It's quickly become my favorite protocol!
in reply to Dane

@TheLastOfHisName it's SO GOOD! And I only covered the tip of the iceberg. I really need to get into pages and other features... I'm thinking of hosting my own Sharkey instance via Yunohost. But first I want to be more familiar / comfortable with Linux

some fun lost history: calckey.world used to run a different Misskey fork called Calckey which later became Firefish. I guess when Firefish project ended (?) they must've managed to move to Sharkey.

At least, I think that's the history if I'm remembering it correctly.

There's so many Misskey forks some of us collectively call them Forkeys

in reply to Emelia ๐Ÿ‘ธ๐Ÿป

@thisismissem thank you for the background info Emelia! I had been wondering about that because I had heard of Calckey (the project) in passing.

Are there any other Misskey forks you'd recommend? I'm really intrigued by Iceshrimp but I'm not sure if it still actively developed

in reply to Elena Rossini โ‚

You might want to check out CherryPick.

IceShrimp.NET is definitely under active development. The backend is excellent, and if you want to use a third party front end like Phanpy or Akkoma FE itโ€™s great! The UI is a work in progress.
