Good morning Fedi friends!

All eyes are on #Pixelfed this week, as #Meta censored all mentions and links to it.

Last year I wrote about the superb interoperability between Pixelfed and #Mastodon - it was one of my first articles for #TheFutureIsFederated, which inspired me to try out more #Fediverse projects.

If you have friends who are curious about the Fediverse and @pixelfed you could share this: blog.elenarossini.com/the-futu…

I imagine that @PixelFed's servers are getting overwhelmed by traffic these days.

I'm lucky to already have a pixelfed.social account. Still, in order not to add to @dansup's server load, I am taking the plunge:

this morning I'll try to set up my own #Pixelfed instance, thanks to the magic of #YunoHost (Pixelfed is in their list of apps).

I'll keep you posted on how it goes!

I decided to run my own PixelFed instance too. So far Yunohost seems incredible! My instance is already running but I'll have to wait publishing it until I get all the settings correct. Currently I'm studying SSL certificates.

@pixelfed @dansup

#pixelfed could play a great role in expanding the fediverse as it's appealing for bluesky users too.
Once they are in , we'll convince them to change microblogging too 🙂

As a #selfhosting newbie I can confirm that if you ever run into issues...

IT'S ALWAYS DNS 😆

Currently setting up my #Pixelfed instance via #YunoHost. I thought I had messed something up, turned to another task for 30 minutes, checked back, and things were all in order. Awww the joys and pains of DNS propagation 😅

in reply to Stu

@therealstu can't say yet because by default Pixelfed has open registrations... so I need to turn this off (the operation isn't super straightforward for a newbie) before I share my new Pixelfed details 😅
@Stu

I totally understand 🙂, no worries ☺️

Will you be using as a single or are you allowing people to join you 🤔

And I did it - managed to set-up my own #Pixelfed instance thanks to the magic of #YunoHost 🥳

@sturmsucht aw Chris if only you knew! The most difficult part was struggling to find my account while looking it up in the Fediverse. ZERO results for like an hour. I tried from Mastodon, GoToSocial, Sharkey... the whole nine yards. Finally added a special permission in YunoHost's dashboard for all visitors - and voilà 😅

I still barely know what I'm doing though - it's mostly spray and pray 🤣

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

haha. it's always that one setting or the extra 30minutes to let DNS do its work
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

@ele Nice job! Do you worry about a lack of discoverability because you'll be on a single-user instance for PixelFed?
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

it is interesting how #DNS and #Fediverse apps will "heal" themselves. For example if #Sidekiq goes down, when you restore it, it takes a few minutes for federation to complete

For DNS , #DNSv6 and #DHCPv6 should improve it a little bit

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

wait until software updates are the problem. I see you're experimenting with lots of software, which makes the maintenance surface quite large.

The more software you run yourself, the more difficult the maintenance, because things do break!

I'd be curious to hear your experience on that point in a few months, you always seem to have great insights.

in reply to Alex Dufournet

@alex thank you Alex and yes, touché. Last week I updated my server and mistakenly crushed a maskdns setting that is vital for YunoHost. Thankfully they have a guide to reverse that, so I fixed the issue with a few lines of code but it was pretty stressful.

I now also have daily backups enabled and I'm waiting to see what happens when GtS or Pixelfed have an available update...

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

it's the biggest drawback I find. Learning new things is fine, spending a little money is fine, but the time spent maintaining each individual system is a lot for my own taste (got two kids)

To me that's the biggest "cost" in my opinion.

We trade convenience for independence.

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

I used to run on yunohost maybe ten years ago. Then I moved abroad and I didn't want to carry self hosting (I was running it at home, and either needed to migrate to a provider or move country with an extra computer... Not the priority in my life at this point)

When I came back, I did pick it up again, but manually this time.

I bought a cheap refurbished computer, installed a stable version of Debian, and run my services through docker.

in reply to Alex Dufournet

@alex I see! On my end, I like the peace of mind of using a VPS instead of a home server... and I love YunoHost's features.

I have only been self-hosting for a month... have zero experience with software updates for Fedi platforms... let's see what happens

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

It's great that you share your fresh opinion on these projects. I think my 10 year old experience with yunohost is almost irrelevant at this point, I doubt the product looks and behave anything like it did back in the days!
in reply to Alex Dufournet

@alex see, I had no idea YunoHost has been around for that long! A couple of people recommended it to me in October and that's why I took the plunge.

I hope my experiences help people in the same shoes as me (i.e. non-developers curious about self-hosting)

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

i decided to test this theory and I linked to Mastodon and Pixelfed and the post hasn't been taken down.

@cbontenbal I have 3 federated Wordpress sites, a GoToSocial self-hosted instance and a Pixelfed self-hosted instance... and I'm just getting started LOL 😅

(aw the arrogance of beginners! I'm just kidding, I barely know what I'm doing and I have infinite respect for REAL developers)

@cbontenbal As you seem to grow on your own server, I hope you're running regular backups?
That's something "beginners" don't do, and they really regret afterwards.
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

@cbontenbal i'd be very curious about your experience with Loops! (can't currently log on, the server must be overloaded from renewed interest)
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

I am so confused. If content posted on Pixelfed can appear on my Mastodon timeline, and if my Mastodon messages can appear on a Pixelfed user’s timeline, and if Mastodon allows to post photos, then why do we have two separate programs (Mastodon and Pixelfed) to basically do the same thing?
in reply to Botolo

@botolo86 you don’t need two accounts. I have a separate Pixelfed account because it feels like a more “curated” experience, with the photos I want to showcase
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

even more then…does this mean that Pixelfed is just a Mastodon skin?
in reply to Botolo

@botolo86 no it’s a photo sharing app with its own unique features that is wonderfully intereoperable with Mastodon and the Fediverse
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

Got it, so if I understand correctly, if I want to just see, for example, photos you post on Pixelfed, I can follow your Pixelfed account here on Mastodon. But if I want to interact more with those photos using unique features of Pixelfed (no idea which ones they are), then I need to go on the Pixelfed website. In that case, do I need to create an account, or can I login with my Mastodon credentials?
