A male Centrocercus urophasianus (greater sage-grouse) at dawn trying to attract a female at a mating lek. They are known for filling giant air sacks in their chests and letting out a low thumping noise. They also strut around while doing the thumping call / display. It's kind of cute, in a strange way. They are extremely sensitive birds and you can't get very close without spooking them. This photo is cropped way in.

@ambivalena Yup, they are funny to watch them strut around thumping. And it seems like the females mostly ignore them. But then an hour or so after sunrise they all fly off in pairs.
