This bird has a completed red head and neck, a white chest and belly and black and white wings. It is a red headed woodpecker. You can't tell the male and female apart by looking. It's several years old, as it takes awhile to get a completely red head. It prefers the shelled peanuts.
This woodpecker has a reddish-orange stripe on its head and neck, a cream colored face, neck, chest and belly with an orangish blotch on its belly and black and white polka dotted wings. This is a male red bellied woodpecker. They are at the suet feeders constantly throughout the day.
This is our largest woodpecker, with its red Woody Woodpecker crest, and black and white body and wings. Since it also has a red mustache, it is a male pileated woodpecker. It's call is a lot like Woody Woodpecker's too.
This medium sized woodpecker with its white chest and belly and black a white head, back and wings looks like a downy woodpeckers, but it's bigger and its beak is longer. It's a hairy woodpecker.

Highly intelligent, ravens can use tools and solve problems. They have a wide and complex range of vocal and non-vocal sounds. These two ravens exchanged a piece of wood and also some kelp on the shoreline of Vancouver Island. Photo and text from my book: Wild Vancouver Island.

Have been searching for Northern Parulas for the past two weeks. Could hear their amazing calls, but never caught a glimpse - until today. This one took pity, came out, yelled at me to 'look-look-over-here', and stayed for several minutes. A rare treat. Their trill song sounds like a miniature vibroseis to me. Tiny birds with a huge voice. One of my favorites.

The Long-tailed Tit is easily recognisable with its distinctive blush, black and white colouring. It also has a tail which is bigger than its body, and a bouncing flight. Sociable and noisy residents, Long-tailed Tits are most usually noticed in small, excitable flocks of about 20 birds. Like most tits, they rove the woods and hedgerows, but are also seen on heaths and commons with suitable bushes.
