#Altmetric (@altmetric) has long tracked #Twitter mentions and now tracks #Bluesky mentions.

Does anyone know whether it tracks #Mastodon mentions?

Unfortunately, #Altmetrics are not tracking mentions on Mastodon or the Fedi.

I asked them some time ago, see details there:
neuromatch.social/@elduvelle/1…

Maybe they'll do it in future, if they figure out how to do it technically and if enough scientists are sharing content on here..

@elduvelle Indeed I remember many discussions about the lack of search of DOIs or links to papers/preprints during the Mastodon migration of late 2022 (poke @iddux). It's one of the frustrating issues which means Mastodon cannot be a fully functional scientific network like Twitter once was and Bluesky is becoming IMO.

El Duvelle reshared this.

It's probably quite difficult as it is not possible to get every instance to "relay" messages to a third party to do this type of tracking.

Bluesky has a firehose of all the posts so this type of tracking is much easier as anyone can subscribe to the the stream in various ways like docs.bsky.app/blog/jetstream

Maybe we could connect at least the scientific instances to this kind of shared "firehose"?
Or maybe posts with a specific hashtag could be added to it somehow?
@jonny might know if this is possible to do or not.. (Jonny this would be to get article mentions on Mastodon / the Fedi tracked on Altmetrics)

It would be extremely easy for them to listen to federated feeds of instances that opt in (or even just mastodon.social), idk what the problems they're talking about are.

Altmetric already tracks an unknown number of personal blogs, it's not clear to me why it would be hard to do it even without a relay - allow instances to sign up to be crawled by altmetric, they crawl the federated feed, simple as.
