The Bonny, Bonny Banks

Mid-July, and the #Scottish woodlands are gloriously green. The high mountain crags are showing their rocky teeth, and a lovely waterfall drops between the trees.

Loch Lomond (Loch Laomainn in Sc. Gaelic) is a freshwater loch which is considered the boundary between the lowlands of Central #Scotland and the Highlands.

I was eight years old when our mum moved us from one end of Scotland to the other. From Jedburgh, where you cross the border to England, to Thurso, where you catch the boat to Orkney. I don’t know what mum saw in Caithness, but I suspect it was just as far as she could go without leaving the country. Caithness is flat and vast and lies prostrate to a wind pushed inland by the thuggish North Sea. A wind that reminds anything attempting to grow that it should perhaps reconsider. On the heaths and moors, plants have no choice but to stay close to the ground and each other. Even in July, when the rest of Scotland is dressed by the full flair of summer, the Flow Country is understated. Thriving in the nutrient-poor soil, bog asphodel, myrtle and bean hide among heather and peat. In the skies above these rare blanket bogs, golden plover and greenshank float silently on warm air and mottled wings. On the coast, the sandstone shark fins of Duncansby Stacks ward off all but the most determined travellers. The Borders are Scotland at its most pastoral, but Caithness akin to a moonscape. I had never seen anything like it. On either side of a road, cutting long and straight through an expansive moorland, people stood in smoke and flames, soft-edged silhouettes as they beat the ground around them with huge paddles. Muirburn, the controlled burning of heather. It felt ancient, apocalyptic. Last paragraph missing as no room for all the text.

Not sure if this is something people here are interested in but there’s a #Croft for sale on Skye #smallholding #crofting #HobbyFarming #Scotland would only suit people who want to live there full-time and work the land as crofts need worked as part of the conditions of being a croft (not a holiday home). This is an interesting, if uncritical, interview with Greg Jackson, CEO of Octopus Energy. He mentions that if regional pricing was in operation in the UK energy market, #Scotland would have the cheapest electricity in Europe (see from 10m 43s).

I'll let you decide what mix of political issues has prevented Westminster from implementing regional pricing, but we in Scotland are paying through the nose for their intransigence.

Dun Beag is one of the best preserved brochs and a good example of a broch tower.

Brochs only appear in Scotland. They are dry stone structures formed of two concentric walls with a narrow entrance passage. Stone stairs ran between the walls to provide access, perhaps to upper floors, and the top.

Scotland’s brochs were built in the Iron Age, first emerging about 2,300 years ago. Their use continued at some until the middle of the first millennium CE.

Perched on a rocky hilltop, it displays a number of defensive features. The entrance is a narrow passage, and door-checks show it was once closed by a timber door. Once inside, there are very few breaks in the strong, tall dry stone walls. One opening, at ground level, leads to a small chamber – possibly a guardroom. Another leads to a narrow stone stair, of which 20 steps still survive, with another possible guard cell at the entrance.  It is likely to have been about 10 metres tall although there is only about 3 metres still standing. It would have been an imposing feature in the landscape. The view from up there takes in Loch Bracadale and the Outer Hebrides in the distance. Brodie the Fox Red Labrador is there to provide some scale.
