Meet Robert Heide: developer, founder of hank, and Tuta user for nearly a decade. He chose privacy before it was a trend, and never looked back.

From leaving Gmail to building a fully EU-based tech stack: Robert's journey is digital sovereignty in action. 🇪🇺

Dutch civil servant fired because he spoke up against the takeover of #Solvinity that provides the #DigiD service. DigiD is the central system that is used in the #Netherlands to log in into official government and related services.

Solvinity, the company hosting DigiD will probably be taken over by Kyndryl, a US company. Putting the login functionality of the Dutch official digital services under US #jurisdiction.

The UK isn’t a vassal state of America.

Yet Trump wants to punish us over a digital services tax.

This can be resolved by ditching US Big Tech from our digital infrastructure.

We should invest in open source to promote economic growth through greater innovation and a more competitive tech sector.

"We tend to think of the internet as permanent, but recent weeks have been a stark reminder of how fragile our digital record really is.

The Internet Archive releases its new book, Vanishing Culture: A Report on Our Fragile Cultural Record, as the headlines tell a parallel story.

The European Commission (@EUCommission) posted this morning about protecting young Europeans in "digital spaces."

Meanwhile commission.europa.eu runs on Amazon CloudFront, with a TLS certificate issued by Amazon, exposing every visitor to foreign data collection (CLOUD Act, FISA 702).

Full legal breakdown in my reply:

Max Schrems and @noybeu have done the legal heavy lifting on why US servers in the EU don't fix this:

#Sécurix et #Bureautix. Ce ne sont pas de nouveaux personnages de la BD Asterix, mais les distros #Linux que le DINUM déploiera sur les postes de travail de ses 250 employés.

Les deux distros sont dérivées de #NixOS

The UK's love affair with Big Tech is toxic.

A small number of companies have captured the market for the UK’s critical infrastructure from the NHS to defence.

From this position, they’ve influenced policies that entrench the UK’s dependency.

It's time to course correct with Digital Sovereignty.

Mastodon, I need your help! As more European countries and orgs look to ditch US technology and move to sovereign or open source alternatives, I'm trying to track these efforts.

So far, I've found more than half a dozen government agencies, cities, orgs, that are embracing digital sovereignty but want to hear about other examples that I've missed. Who else should I be adding to this?

Here's a list of what I have so far:

*Edit: This list is now on Proton Sheets, as I should have seen that coming*

A growing number of MPs that have signed the Early Day Motion calling for a Digital Sovereignty strategy and spoken out in debates.

It'll take political courage to end our digital dependency on powerful tech companies. But the risks of not acting are greater.

The way forward is having the leadership to promote alternatives to Big Tech and using shared, Open Source tech.

It isn't about 'Buy British'. Open Source allows multiple partners and governments to develop the tools they need.

That means no vendor lock-in that frees us from coersion and control.

The dominance of Big Tech in social media is itself a risk to democracy.

Yet the government supports Big Tech monopolies with ad spending and content without publishing on the alternatives.

They complain about Big Tech’s failures, while only giving users the opportunity to engage through Big Tech.

Digital dependence poses serious democratic risks.

They include lobbying, interference in trade agreements, deregulation and producing e-waste.

Governments become spellbound by techno-solutionism as vendors promote their way of doing things.

This only leads to greater economic extraction.

Making ourselves dependent on Big Tech has been a fatal mistake.

The Post Office scandal didn't come from nowhere. Outsourcing our systems to the exclusive product of a single provider means we're locked-in to using it and them.

This leads to over-charging that costs in failure and extracts value.

#DigitalSovereignty #bigtech #tech #opensource #ukpolitics #ukpol

The UK government has blanked the risks of US tech dependency for too long.

Our digital infrastructure is a strategic asset.

But that understanding is absent in how we hand out public sector contracts and allow UK tech sector sell-offs to foreign companies.

We must shift the dial.

It's SO REFRESHING to hear Marietje Schaake (former EU MP 🇪🇺) make the case for #digitalsovereignty and #opensource EU-based alternatives NOT JUST to protect European interests and European data, but also to protect human rights in the US and abroad.

NHS workers are being gagged from criticising the Palantir contract 🤐

We can't duck the hard truths that embedding US Big Tech in UK public services carries risks of outside political interference and waste from vendor lock-in.

The alternative is here: Digital Sovereignty with open source tech.

Almost two-thirds are in favour of replacing American technology with European solutions. The biggest obstacle is the enormous sums that American companies spend on lobbying. I recently heard it said that ‘the market has spoken’ – which is why everyone uses Microsoft and Google.

That doesn’t exactly sound very much like progressive politics. It suggests we believe the market should take care of everything in our societies. 1/2
