An article on the evacuations carried out last week by IUPALS (Italian Universities for Palestinian Students) that @joynewacc shared with me (which also has lovely photos of her and the other students in it):

While the article is generally good, it does call it a “war” (it’s an ongoing genocide) and it does focus very much on how thankful the students are for the evacuation (which, of course, they are) without mentioning that it is the bare minimum a country whose government is complicit in the genocide could do to atone for its sins.

It also doesn’t mention, for that matter, that a certain professor at the university had to post 15 viral videos on Instagram until the Italian government’s on-purpose blocking of the evacuation became more trouble for them than it was worth, thereby forcing their hand to allow it to go ahead (this is why we’d been waiting since November. The Italian government saw that the evacuations were working and decided to put a spanner in the works right before Joy’s group was due to leave.)

Having met and spent time with all of the students in Milan last week I can attest that it is *we* who are so much better off having them with us. And it is us who should be thankful.

We also have so much work left to do: To force our governments to cease their complicity in genocide, to compel Israel to end this genocide, and to dismantle the apartheid state and begin the reparations process. Those of us on the right side of history will not stop until the people of Palestine are free.

Just returned from Milan. Joy’s settling in. Thank you again to everyone who helped make this happen.

We had the most wonderful reception in Milan this week. Everyone – from the guard at the metro ticket station shouting “Free Palestine” and “welcome to Milan” as he beeped each one of the evacuees through for free as we were retuning from the airport to the wonderful family I met on my way there inviting us to their home for aperitivo to meet Joy – has been so loving and supportive.

It gives you hope for humanity.

At the U. of #Michigan’s recent commencement ceremony, history professor Derek Peterson delivered a 5-minute speech in which he celebrated all those who have fought for justice at the university, my alma mater. Invoking our legendary fight song, he asked the crowd to “sing” for suffragist Sarah Burger, who battled to get #women admitted as students; for Moritz Levi, UM's first #Jewish professor; for all the students who fought for #RacialJustice at #UM as part of the Black Action Movement; and for the “pro-#Palestinian student activists, who have over these past two years opened our hearts to the injustice and inhumanity of #Israel’s war in #Gaza.”
