I've always been interested in the history of the #BritishIsles. Today, I'm recommending a historical novel, the first of #TheSaxonStories, #TheLastKingdom.
It is set at the end of the 9th century and follows the rise + reign of #KingÆlfredTheGreat of the West + then the #AngloSaxons.

Besides the writings of Marx, which I had to read at school, Spinoza's Ethics was the first book in philosophy that I studied as a late teenager. At the time I was obsessed with Jena Romanticism, so it was a natural choice (after Novalis). I don't think I understood it. But it opened the door to the world of philosophy for me.

Das Buch hat meinem Vater gehört. Es sind noch seine Anstreichungen darin. Er starb früh. Die Dünndruckseiten haben mich magisch angezogen. Irgendwann als Teenager las ich den Hyperion, und seitdem lässt mich Hölderlin nicht mehr los. Ich studierte über die Jahre besonders die späte Lyrik bis ins Detail, versuchte sogar, Altgriechisch zu lernen, um die sprachlichen Verbindungen zu erkennen.

This book belonged to my father. It still contains his annotations. He died young. I was magically drawn to the thin pages. At some point as a teenager, I read Hyperion and Hölderlin has stayed with me ever since. Over the years, I studied the late poetry in great detail, even trying to learn ancient Greek in order to recognise the connections to Pindar.

Dieses Buch machte mich nicht nur mit dem Werk von Georg Trakl (@trakl ) bekannt, sondern eröffnete mir auch völlig neue Zugänge zum Verständnis von Poesie jenseits des bräsigen Klassenbewusstseins á la Georg Lukacs. Hier wurde Poesie als solche ernst genommen, in ihrer Eigenart, von innen. Es zeigte eine Form von Widerstand gegen unmenschliche Verhältnisse, die ihre Kraft aus eben der Form zog.

This book not only familiarised me with the work of Georg Trakl (@trakl), but also opened up completely new approaches to understanding poetry beyond the sluggish class consciousness á la Georg Lukacs. Here, poetry was taken seriously as such, in its own way, from the inside. It showed a form of resistance to inhuman conditions that drew its strength from its very form.

Die Lyrik von Rimbaud sprach mein inneres Temperament an, das sich nach außen nicht so oft zeigt, eher in dem was ich schreibe. Rimbaud war außerdem, wie auch Hölderlin, ein Beispiel dafür, dass ein Mensch nicht unbedingt beruflich oder sein ganzes Leben Dichter oder Schriftsteller sein muss. Es gibt so viel mehr als Kunst! Immerhin bin ich kein Waffenhändler geworden.
Rimbaud's poetry spoke to my inner temperament, which doesn't often show on the outside, rather in what I write. Rimbaud was also, like Hölderlin, an example of how a person doesn't necessarily have to be a poet or writer professionally or for their whole life. There is so much more than art! After all, I didn't become an arms dealer.
