Seasonal Sentinels

November, September, and February. Three shots of the same mountains, three different moods.

These memorable peaks are visible from the main ringroad (route 1) and I snapped them during different visits, years apart.

Akrafjall (1151m) and SΓ³lheimafjall (1171m) in BlΓΆnduhlΓΓ°arfjΓΆll near VarmahlΓΓ° in SkagafjΓΆrΓ°ur, north-western #Iceland.

Midnight Sun

"Sing, siren, for thyself and I will dote:
Spread o'er the silver waves thy golden hairs,
And as a bed I'll take them, and there lie"
- #ShakespeareSunday, Comedy of Errors

July, 9:30pm: Looking north across BreidafjΓΆrdur.

The sky didn't fully darken while we were there, it turned to a lovely, silvery twilight. Blue sky or Blue Hour, there wasn't much between.

Home Of The Winds

February, and a farm nestles at the foot of HlΓΓ°arfjall. This 1116m/3660ft high mountain is better known from the other side as it stands above Akureyri, and contains the ski slopes.

Vindheimar in Þelamârk, north-eastern #Iceland.

A stormy morning drive through the valley, the lowering sky looming closely overhead.

Horses On A Hill

Iceland in February, very beautiful but with unpredictable weather. We never travel without a change of warm and dry clothes, plenty of water and a high calorie snack. This was the tail-end of a strong wind storm, and we were glad to see it finish.

Vatnsdalsfjall (882m) in HΓΊnavatnshreppur, north-western #Iceland.

#SilentSunday

"His qualities were beauteous as his form,
For maiden-tongued he was, and thereof free;
Yet, if men moved him, was he such a storm
As oft 'twixt May and April is to see,
When winds breathe sweet, untidy though they be."
- #ShakespeareSunday, Lover's Complaint

A sparsely inhabited fjord on a still summer's day.

KollafjΓΆrΓ°ur, ReykhΓ³lahreppur, Westfjords of NW #Iceland.

Snow Dome

November: A shot from a plane flying at 6500m between Reykjavik to Akureyri. The accumulation of snowflakes on the top of HrΓΊtfell (1396m) eventually flows as part of a glacier - HrΓΊtfellsjΓΆkull.

The other mountains are Innra-Sandfell and Femra-Sandfell. BlΓ‘skΓ³gabyggΓ° in the western Central Highlands of #Iceland.

Glacial Reflection

A sunset boat ride across FjallsΓ‘rlΓ³n lagoon, towards the snout of FjallsjΓΆkull glacier.

The mountain on the left is Γ†rfjall (407m/1335ft) and the hook-shaped tongue on the left is HrΓΊtΓ‘rjΓΆkull - the 'Ram Glacier'.

Ox Valley

February: Crossing the TrΓΆllaskagi peninsular on a beautifully crisp day. The main ring-road, Route 1, passes between multiple 1000+ metre high mountains as it winds between SkagafjΓΆrΓ°ur and EyjafjΓΆrΓ°ur in the north of #Iceland.

I particularly love this spot, dropping down into Γ–xnadalur from KrΓ³kΓ‘rdalur, but I'd never seen the road picked out so clearly before.

Glacial Motion

SvΓnafellsjΓΆkull ("Pig Mountain Glacier") in the midday sunshine, farm buildings at its foot lending scale.

The dark lobe near ground level at the snout is from a landslide - the glacier shrinkage has left the side walls dangerously unsupported, and the collapse is accelerating the melt of the ice beneath.

October, HornafjΓΆrΓ°ur in south-eastern #Iceland.

Sunset Moonrise

4pm and the sun is beginning to set in the west-southwest. The semi-frozen fjord waters are partly reflecting the cyan sky, and parts of the opposite bank are picking up the late sunlight.

February: HrΓΊtafjΓΆrΓ°ur in north-western #Iceland.
