Wow, look at the swirling smoke plume over the ocean from the Los Angeles fires! How tragic. :(

>Just months ago, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass approved a $17.6 million reduction in the budget for the Los Angeles Fire Department for the 2024-2025 fiscal year. The LAFD reduction was the second largest budget cut for this year, following a $21.4 million cut to Street Services. As the Bass administration fought for cuts to be made across crucial social services such as Fire, Sanitation, and Public Works, the Los Angeles Police Department received a colossal increase of $126 million to their annual budget.

This is a mind-numbing satellite image from Maxar Technologies of the wildfire in Altadena, posted at CNN.

The hi-res composite image was taken at 10:45 a.m. PT by one of their LEO satellites and uses a mix of shortwave infrared and visible wavelengths. It shows nearly every building in western Altadena on fire 😢.

JPL is just to the west of the NW quadrant of this image.

Some NASA services hosted at JPL are now offline or nonoperational.
E.g. - DSN now and JPL Horizons.

The DSN Goldstone site in Barstow is probably OK.

The update from JPL at nasawatch.com/personnel-news/j… also stated that "Hundreds of JPLers have been evacuated from their homes & many have lost homes. Special thx to our emergency crews. Pls keep us in your thoughts & stay safe."
🙏

We are not prepared.

“There’s no number of helicopters or trucks that we can buy, no number of firefighters that we can have, no amount of brush that we can clear that will stop this,” Garcetti, said. “The only thing that will stop this is when the earth, probably long after we’re gone, relaxes into a more predictable weather state.”nytimes.com/2025/01/08/opinion…

After the 2021 Marhsall Fire, some homeowners felt relieved that their houses had survived. However, they faced another risk: smoke and ash can blow under doors and around windows, bringing in chemicals that stick to walls and other indoor surfaces and continue off-gassing for weeks to months.
