The Webb image shows intricate details of the heated gas and dust as the protostellar jet slams into the material. Webb also resolves the “fuzzy” object located at the tip of the outflow into a distant spiral galaxy. The Spitzer image shows 3.6-micron light in blue, the 4.5-micron in green, and the 8.0-micron in red (IRAC1, IRAC2, IRAC4). In the Webb image, blue represents light at 2.0-microns (F200W), cyan represents light at 3.3-microns (F335M), green is 4.4-microns (F444W), orange is 4.7-microns (F470N), and red is 7.7-microns (F770W). The intricate features of the outflow, represented in reddish-orange color, provide detailed clues about how young stars form and how their jet activity affects the environment around them. Like the wake of a speeding boat, the bow shocks in this image have an arc-like appearance as the fast-moving jet from the young star slams into the surrounding dust and gas. A chance alignment in this direction of the sky provides a beautiful juxtaposition of this nearby Herbig-Haro object with a more distant spiral galaxy in the background. Herbig-Haro 49/50 gives researchers insights into the early phases of the formation of low-mass stars similar to our own Sun. I look at a lot of space images, but this one made my eyes bug out like a cartoon character.

What you see here isn't a spiral galaxy, exactly. It's a spiral galaxy whose image was bent into a circle by the gravity of an elliptical galaxy visible at the center.

This new NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope Picture of the Month features a rare cosmic phenomenon called an Einstein ring. What at first appears to be a single, strangely shaped galaxy is actually two galaxies that are separated by a large distance. The closer foreground galaxy sits at the center of the image, while the more distant background galaxy appears to be wrapped around the closer galaxy, forming a ring.

Ascent (2012) (NASA commentary on a high quality slow motion film of a space shuttle launch)

NASA documentary where a NASA engineer and NASA photographer comment on a very high quality slow motion film of a space shuttle launch, taken in close-up from many different angles. They provide technical insights on each aspect of the launch, including how the shuttle itself works and how it was filmed.

The cameras were run at high speed in order to have slow motion detailed views of everything happening in the launch. This was mainly for engineering purposes to check whether the shuttle was working correctly, but as a side-effect it produced spectacular high quality imagery that forms the basis of this documentary.

The specific shuttle is Discovery, the mission is STS-124 (more info at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/STS-124).

Another one bites the (Moon)dust!

This is Intuitive Machines' #IM2 lander that once again toppled over after trying to land on Mons Mouton near the lunar south pole.

The picture had lots of detail hidden in the shadows which I brought out in processing.
