#HolosSocial isn't bringing something new to the #Fediverse, especially not to #ActivityPub. It builds on what exists, without mimicking any platform.
Every social network has been given its fediverse clone. Asking people to hold a separate account on each is taking the problem backwards.
If the fediverse keeps mirroring the GAFAM, it loses. The point was never to rebuild their world, but to offer something else: one identity across every content.
HolosSocial is simply a try. But we can do it.

The fundraiser for a new computer is still ongoing.

This machine is what keeps #HolosSocial, #Fedilab, #Castlab and #Fediplan moving forward on Android, iOS, and soon #Holos on macOS, Windows and Linux, from a single codebase. The current setup is reaching its limits.

Every contribution helps, and sharing helps too :). Thank you.

Change of plans for this week, and I apologise for moving things around. I was supposed to get back to #Fedilab mid week for the 3.40.2 release, but I will postpone it. I am very focused on #HolosSocial at the moment, and stopping now to come back a few days later would cost too much in context switching, both in time and in concentration. Fedilab 3.40.2 will follow right after the next #Holos milestone (end of the week). (1/5)

The desktop interface of #HolosSocial will be quite simple and #E2EE already works great.

The work for the desktop version of #HolosSocial is progressing well. I'm now finishing the last adjustments, the same way I did for iOS, before moving to the per-platform packaging. Not ready for release yet, but it's getting close.

Out of curiosity, would you use the desktop version on

  • Linux (76%, 19 votes)
  • macOS (12%, 3 votes)
  • Windows (12%, 3 votes)
25 voters. Poll end: in 17 hours

#Holos is a new social network working with #ActivityPub. This is not an app where you can connect your Mastodon, Pixelfed or PeerTube account.
There is no web version and no API because the ActivityPub server runs on the device itself. That's the whole challenge behind this project.
If there is more engagement, I plan to build a desktop version and even sync between different devices.

RE: mastodon.social/@HolosSocial/1…

#Holos joining #FDroid will be another challenge.
I personally want to encourage everyone to use their own custom domain to fully own their Fediverse identity. You can also use your own S3/WebDAV for backups and media hosting.
This setup means no dependency on a relay.
If the relay goes down, if you get blocked, or if you want to move, you keep your full identity.
This F-Droid release should help attract more users and bring in more feedback to move the project forward.

Now #Fedilab and #HolosSocial use "web+ap://" to open messages or profiles inside the app, like Conversations does (github.com/tuskyapp/Tusky/issu…).

#HolosDiscover now has a dedicated button to open messages in apps supporting it.

#HolosSocial will soon reach #Fdroid official builds and also be available on Google Play. For #iOS, it is already on TestFlight and #Altstore.

The relay has been reduced to its minimum of dependencies, but remains necessary. Currently, only holos.social exists.

You could host a relay in a different region (currently Europe). The goal is not to have one big relay with smaller ones around it.

Please share. More about it: holos.social/how-it-works

On #Holos, the user decides where media lives. Cached on the relay (10 MB cap), or pushed to a personal S3, WebDAV. Signed URLs for private buckets, direct URLs for public ones. Video compression configurable on the device before upload. Backups and media can share storage or be separated.
The architecture makes it possible: there is no instance admin to ask, and the relay holds no media beyond a temporary cache. The choice belongs to the user.

If some #iOS users are interested in joining a #Fediverse server that runs on your device, you can join the #HolosSocial project through #AltStore or drop an email at hello@fedilab.app to join TestFlight beta testers.
