I find it funny that every week we get headlines like ”Meta’s Threads Seeks Relevancy to Become True Rival to Musk’s X” and the Fediverse users are like:

#Fediverse #X #SocialWeb #SocialMedia #Threads

Roni Laukkarinen reshared this.

#Fediverse is trying so hard to be like X it is gagging users limiting them to 500 characters, exactly what multinational corporate mass media want.

To limit people from writing and reading text, relying on high-cost a/v media production for information.

And most mastodon server owners imitate the same limit for no reason!

It’s a bit of a stretch to say character limit means ”trying so hard to be X”. I completely disagree. It has nothing to do with that, especially because X character limit is still 280.

Most of the social media software in the Fediverse have mostly the same features and some more. Most of the microblogging platforms resemble X by their UIs. And that’s perfectly OK. Take my Bird UI for example, inspired by Twitter: https://github.com/ronilaukkarinen/mastodon-bird-ui

The difference is, we don’t have a single owner here. This is open source. We don’t ”try hard to be X”, that is bullshit, because most of us escaped from X. And that’s the only difference that matters.

PS. We have 10000 chars. My WordPress has endless.

@yianiris they have a point, though they presented it badly - Twitter (and mciroblogging) is designed to do two things; work via SMS, and earn money.

What they're asking is, should the fediverse follow in the footsteps? Or should we go for a different way to model conversations?

@yianiris those are very interesting questions.

I love going MICROBLOGGING EVILLL but I'm that sure I'm right on that tbh

First of all learn some "civil discussion skills' this is an international medium, not your "hood"

Second of all, if I can overlook your aggressive response, explain the resistance of raising text limits by the overwhelming majority of mastodon server owners if it is not as you say "X wannabes"

Simple text config file, 20" to locate the field and edit it for the server, right?

@ppb1701 Some think it is, some think it’s not. For me it has not been for two years.

Not been the same for me over there since Musk took over, granted I don't have an account over there anymore either. He (and his policies) ruined it. Though that is also why I found the Fediverse so 🤷‍♂️

Media's over there on Threads cheering the 1yr anniversary and massive user numbers. The preview image for the article link is always Zuck 🙄so I like to add a reply with the graph in the articles LoL

shouldn't news people end every article like this with "but having any company or person in such a position to influence what news and opinions get attention is not healthy"?
