Meta is an amoral vampire corporation, please defederate Threads 🙏
"On Wednesday, Meta fronted a parliamentary Select Committee on Adopting Artificial Intelligence and admitted it has used Australians' posts to train its AI models – and has done as far back as 2007 – unless they were denoted as private, or posted by users under 18 years of age."
"When pressed on whether that meant pictures of minors posted by an adult, (Meta) execs reportedly first said it wouldn't happen, then corrected their position and admitted images of minors could be ingested."
"That admission didn't go down well."

@justinf Yeah, for now. It's beta and progressing really slowly. I'm eagerly awaiting what the full integration will be like. A week ago we already saw a progress about two-way replies: https://www.threads.net/@0xjessel/post/C_Oeq5by64q/

[Allegedly] [...] Meta is delaying Fediverse support for European Union Threads users due to the Digital Markets Act, which (for better or worse) complicates launching new technologies within the European Market for non-European companies.

Yeah. It is going to stay that way. People don't like setting things up. There will always be that 0.1% of nerds like me and you who love owning their own data, like configuring things and having their own setups. I'm sure the number will grow though.
I have my own home theater which works offline in case the end of the world happens, I host my own purchased audiobooks on open source platform etc... But most of the folks want to pay the monthly fee for corporations to do things for them, or create and account owned and exploited by Meta and not care about their content or individual rights. That's the way it goes I'm afraid.
Yet we do have this new strange hybrid where we once again have a choice like in the beginning of the Internet. Power back to the people. It's a very good thing and that's why I am an open Internet advocate. We should embrace it no matter what the majority will say. I like to be vocal about it anyway, because it makes sense to me.

Bluesky grows to 9M+ users
In other words, the social platform’s user base has grown by around 50 percent in the week or so since a Brazilian court banned X (formerly Twitter).
The ban sent Bluesky to the top of the free iPhone app charts in Brazil, where it’s currently ranked number two, behind Meta’s competing app Threads.

I am trolling #threads for bad medical takes with many likes and interactions.
Today's gem is this:
> So, Metformin is the new weight loss pill?? 💊 80x stronger than Ozempic ??? 🤔
Facts: no, it is not. It does have a mild effect on gastric emptying and some other weight loss features, but they're barely noticeable in non-diabetics, and there's no research to suggest, that this is a permanent thing. Metformin does have diarrhea as a known and common side effect, which may lower weight at the beginning. But, no, just no.
People complain on #threads that by federating, they can't control where their posts go. That it's dangerous. I guess with full federation, you can control who follows you using the protocol. That's nice.
But on most social networks, your posts are public. Even if people need to log in to see it, any user of that service can copy your posts to anywhere they want to. Bots can scrape them. Welcome to blogs and RSS.
Very few have thought at all about what #microblogging is. It's not a chat room.
Metan omistama Threads maksaa suosituista julkaisuista influenssereille riihikuivaa rahaa

So Threads is paying “Influencers” up to $5000 to make viral posts. This will for sure increase the quality of their instance. Not.
(Don’t complain if you are on #instagram / #threads, you knowingly went there because of your secret desire to be “influenced”. No kink shaming though!)

"Since June, users have been able to see fediverse replies on their posts if they enabled #fediverse sharing in the app’s settings. Once enabled, the sharing option allows users to syndicate their posts across the wider social web and then see how people on other services have responded. Now users will be able to see the fediverse replies on other people’s posts, too. This immediately brings more content into #Threads, even without a sizable increase in Threads users."

Pretty interesting "podcast" here on Activity Pub, AT Protocol, and the Fediverse overall. I say podcast due to it really just being kind of a video essay with many segments and cuts. Talks about the Fediverse, how things came about, and where things are going. It's good to see more of this getting out to the masses. It's by @mkbhd, @andrew_manganelli, @davidimel, and @parmesanpapi17.
